About half of those artists aren't from the seventies though. Technically Saga are but they only had two albums in that decade. You listed all quality stuff regardless though.

[So, Scruffynerfherder, how deep have your dived so far? Have you tried bands like UK, Gentle Giant and Caravan? Or are we getting deeper and the likes of Gnidrolog and Nektar?]

Nektar aren't really any deeper than the first few you mentioned. They might not be as widely known in prog circles these days I suppose but they had albums in the top forty in the US which is more than I can say for the other bands.

Great suggestions!!! Some I really like already.
Over the past year or so I've also listened to:
    The strawbs
    UK
    Mike oldfield
    Vandergraff generator
    Gentle giant
    Fever tree
    Gandalf
    Glass hammer (saw them live!!)
ELP (saw Palmer live with his band. Fucking sick ass show)
    Transatlantic
    Spocks beard
    Neal morse band
Yezda urfa. ( cancer of the band has the most ridiculous lyrics. I'd pay someone $1k if they can tell me what it's about hahaha)
    Romantic warrior
Keith Jarrett. (Arbor zena is amazing)

There are already more great suggestions in this thread than you need to keep you busy for a while, but I'll toss in a nice obscurity:

    Faithful Breath - Fading Beauty

Another one from Germany(and a must have if you like mid 70's Genesis even though it doesn't sound too much like them):

    Epidaurus- Earthly Paradise

And these were just five British ones.
Allow me to second the Second Hand, Jonesy and Marsupilami suggestions. The Second Hand album is really weird and totally unique. Jonesy’s album really is a missing gem of 70s prog, their other two albums don’t come anywhere close to it. On the other hand, I think both Marsupilami albums are must-haves.

    [Romantic warrior ]

Are you referring to the band Return to Forever who had an album with this title or something else? There was an obscure Italian band from the 90's called Romantic Warriors but I get the feeling that's not what you meant.

There was a top 100 proto prog list a few years ago. I didn't know anyone narrowed it down to 50. Isn't that kind of like taking half of the nachos out of the bag and throwing away the rest?

Some of this album is extraordinarily beautiful, but I do find the vocals a serious weak spot. Still a worthy recommendation however. Funnily enough, it's on my shelf right beside my earlier Faithful Breath suggestion, and on the same reissue label (Garden Of Delights)!

The female lead singer was still better than many male vocalists though. Typically us prog fans learn to live with weak vocalists and most of us don't really listen to prog for the vocals anyway. Do we?

Not really. But it's always nice when the vocals ARE good. I do like that Epidaurus album a lot despite its shortcomings.

Yes, the Babylon album is great! And the England album mentioned earlier in the thread.

Not sure if these have been mentioned, but a few more pretty good and obscure ones, early 70's English that have that good old sound:

    • Indian Summer - Indian Summer (1971)
    • Khan - Space Shanty (1972)
    • Jan Dukes de Grey - Mice and Rats in the Loft (1971)
    • Cressida - Cressida/Asylum (1970/1)
    • Gnidrolog - In Spite of Harry's Toenail, Lady Lake (1972)
    • Locomotive - We are Everything You See (1970)

Good list, I would question the “proto” status of some of the later releases, though. I mean, my God, that Kestrel album was released in 1975! Isn’t that a bit long in the tooth to be considered “proto-prog”?
