you guys and my pa fav grumpies feel like my annoying little brother right now grrrrr ....
it looks like our irritating big sister needs a little spanking right about now!!
I'd be ok with Satriani in PA as prog-related, but your starting a thread over here (instead of over at PA) won't help your case, though.
You might have made your demand in the ad-hoc PA forum.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
are there any musicians out there? let us know your point of view too please?
Yeah, I believe I've had a similar discussion here on PE about a decade ago.
I think most folks on here like Joe. I love him, even though I have found a lot of his more recent albums to seem a bit "samey".
So the discussion basically boils down to this: Joe's band lays down whatever pattern he wants, then Joe solos over that. Nothing at all wrong with that, when it works, it's beautiful, which is 90% of the time in my case.
Demanding prog fans want more, they want a group effort, not a solo artist issuing work orders to build a showcase for himself. Now, how Joe's approach differs from other solo artists who most consider "progressive" is likely an entirely different discussion.
I think that is the general "prog" community's attitude towards Satch, right or wrong, there it is. Perhaps his formula has changed now that Mike Keneally is involved, I have a feeling he would object to any musical "work orders" he receives, even from Joe.
I also know two other things as facts:
Tons of prog fans love Joe, whether his music fits in the progbox or not.
Where Satriani takes the guitar is indeed "progressive".
“Where words fail, music speaks.” - Hans Christian Anderson
you may not have much a choice, but until you've made your demand in the proper PA sub-forum, you'll have zero chance
It might be wise to stop making a "scandal" here, if you want to have your way over there. siffle.gif

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

Start your own thread here below (same link I gave you this morning) >> every band has its own thread/topic... You don't get a safepass

I think the charges of the music being similar from album to album are pretty fair. Has has a certain style/formula that he has built a career around. You can't expect him to just abandon that.... Yes, Joe writes the tunes. But he does give them some leeway to add their personalities too. I mean, you don’t hire Keneally, Minneman and Beller to just lay back- anyone could do that and many of Joe's prior bands pretty much did. Having these guys in tow now though was like strapping a rocket engine to Joe’s ass- one he clearly was ready for. It really changed the whole vibe of his shows. The whole dynamic. Before it was all about guitar. Now drummers might want to go too. That was never the case before with his prior bands, expect maybe for the Mover/Hamm lineup and even then, meh.... Hiring three of the prog genre’s best talents oughta be enough to get him in the door over there as far as I am concerned. Those guys are all over at PA for other bands/reasons already anyway…. Maybe you should point that out to the folks at PA?

I'm a musician (guitar, bass). I have a few Satch albums and I like them well enough, but I'd have to say I much prefer Steve Vai. I like Vai for some of the reasons mentioned earlier - the rhythm section is more varied and interesting (to me), the songs are more outside-the-box (in general, but of course not always), and it feels like he's pushing musical and technique boundaries further than many from the shred crowd. So in those ways Vai is more proggy, IMO.
Not to put JS down - he's a great guitarist - but I just don't think his songwriting is that interesting a lot of the time. There are exceptions in his material, but thinking back on his albums my impression is of a lot of standard song format, stating a melody, embellishing on that melody in subsequent verses, etc. He does that in a very nice, compelling way for what it is, but I never thought of JS as "prog rock" (for what that's worth...since no one can define prog)...and I was happy when the '90s were over (because I mostly listened to Vai, Satch, Johnson, Hoey, etc.) and I found what I felt was much more interesting music.
