Also, anyone who mentions Geldof or McGowan in this thread on great Irish singers will be due a kick in the knackers

BTW, for those of you who haven't heard it yet I strongly recommend Christy Moore's cover of Shine On You Crazy Diamond and his cover of Fairytale of New York (which was the first version I ever heard, and is the best version IMO)

    Yeah, he is.

How does Peter forget Clodagh Simonds and Alison O'Donnell?

One of my top albums of 2015 is from Ireland:

Dolores O’Riordan gets my vote as Ireland’s worst singer. I find her painful to listen to!

    Van for sure.

Bono was cool until Joshua Tree, but during the Rattle & Ho-Hum period, he started to change.

Then, just prior to Achtung Baby, he was abducted and exchanged by his handlers and henceforth could only be seen with sunglasses. Coincidence? I think not! Thus I posit the following conspiracy theory: The Bono from Achtung Baby onward is not the real Bono. Call him Clono…or something.

Incidentally, I feel the need to call out the inclusion of Van Morrison. Great he may be in some ways, but I'm not keen on his singing at all.

I have only one Van album: "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart", which I like, b ut it's an unusual album for him because he let his voice take a back seat, and it's about half instrumentals.

Wow. To start a list of "all the great" Irish singers without including John McCormack is a flooping joke.

My idea was not to create a comprehensive list of singers, just those I've heard and like.

You're right of course. The Count was foremost in my mind when creating the thread but my aim was to restrict it to pop, rock and folk singers. I have several of his albums on vinyl. I could also have mentioned the other great Irish tenor Josef Locke and of course Frank Patterson.

I would classify Rory Gallagher as a great guitarist, but not a great singer.

    John Lennon

That original list seems to be a list of Irish singers, whether great or not. Especially, since Van isn't even on it.

John Lennon was half Irish, that said he grew up in England, so culturally British not Irish.

My original list is of singers I like and that I think are great, it is NOT just a list of Irish singers, if it were I would have also included singers that I DON'T like and don't think are great e.g.

    Van Morrison
    Val Doonican
    Bono
    Bob Geldof
    Shane McGowan
    Ronny Drew
    Liam Clancy
    Tommy Makem
    Frank Harte
    John Reilly
    Boyzone
    Westlife
    Jedward
    Big Tom

    to name but a few.

    I wasn't being 100% serious.

    How about John O'Lennon?

Is Gary Moore a great singer - he is ok, but great?
If you listen to BBM you can compare him with Jack Bruce...

Johnny Fean, Barry Devlin and Charles O'Conner from a little band called Horslips.
To be or not to be? That is the point. - Harry Nilsson.
