I enjoy Transatlantic, but there's no way they belong at 19. And where the hell is Kate Bush?

    Kate was 21
TA would be in my top 10, certainly above Marillion & Steve Wilson!

Hmm, no Renaissance in the top 20? Surprising. I'd think they would be ahead of Kate Bush (who you said was 21).

Nice to see some interesting picks like Knifeworld, Thinking Plague & Cardiacs (stunning at 14). What the hell are Henry Cow doing at 43 & where are Hatfield & The North and Univers Zero? A lot of average bands high up the list.

How dafuc did Steven "boring" Wilson get into the top ten?

  7. #7
Hatfields and National Health are missing amongst a great many others, it's a typical prog magazine list, compiled from their readers votes, so no surprise it is lowest common prog denominator stuff.

I'm surprised he got higher than Porcupine Tree that's for sure!

    John Mclaughlin cited Jeff Beck
    Bruce Soord cited Chris Squire
    Roine Stolt cited Alan Holdsworth
    Dave Sturt cited Daevid Allen
    Claudio Simonetti cited ELP
    Eric Guenther cited YES
    Dave Brock cited Touch
    Ray Schulman cited Miles Davis
    Nick Beggs cited Chris Squire

I consider Raven his best album (except I don't know about H. C. E. yet), so it doesn't surprise me!

The fact is that there has been no new material from Porcupine Tree since 2009, so there is probably a sizable demographic who only know him as a solo artist.

There are a couple of acts in the top 20 that I don't like much, but the only one I have any problems with being in the list is Transatlantic, for the reasons others have said.

Time for another round of "Waah, this list is crap because ( _____ ) and ( ---------- ) are not in the list."

Personally, I'm a bit tired of these recurring petulant accusations of "lowest common denominator" simply because someone's favourite artist didn't get lots of votes.

Hi Nogbad, I can easily get your point, Aranis is other band that - regardless of the fact that I've been enjoying it the more I hear them - sure deserves a place on that list just for their freaking innovative approach.
I personaly have issues to agree with most of these sorts of lists, as I usually find them too tied to mostly Rock based prog/progressive artists. As an example I see just Gabriel as a solo artist in the first 30, where are the many others?
Have you and your family/friends a happy new year!

I guess "Dave Stewart"=Egg/Hatfield/Health. Why is Ian Anderson there if Tull already is? Other than that, the most perfect list I've ever seen.

Peculiar list, but what to expect from a list voted by Readers, as said before : lowest common prog denominator.

It's very likley some of the voters would not be able to name 100 bands at all. (they don't have to)

I have no idea what a "Ne Obliviscaris" is, so I'm not aware of the lowest denominator, shame on me.

Some surprises: The Plastic People Of The Universe it would't expected enough People to know them.

Some are really funny "Haze" (?) a charming but very low level Neo band in the Top 100?

Well, as the majority are from UK (as usual), I'm glad that one of my favourites is there, but sure not for his works that I'm always keen on listening to.
    Anyways thank you sir.
