Yeah, I know. Kay & I together couldn't finish a corned beef sandwich at the Carnegie in Vegas (I wonder if that closed too). There is now NO Jewish style deli in midtown Manhattan. I don't even know if there's another Jewish deli in the entire city other than Katz's downtown on Houston St., which is where my food was shipped from.Originally Posted by ronmac

When I was a kid my family had a tradition that when The Wizard of Oz was on TV the one time they showed it per year (around Easter for some reason) we watched it while eating deli food (from the Madison Delicatessen at 86th and Madison - it was great!). I think next year for either Christmas or New Years we'll get deli food - we have a pretty good deli sort of nearby. It's a great binge food!
Madison Delicatessen had amazing linzer tarts - that was almost the best part.
Isn't 2nd Ave Deli still around? They moved to 33rd and 3rd at one point but I think it's still there. And there are a few Ben's delis around which aren't bad -that's what we here in Westchester. There was also a decent one in the 70s around third ace - forget the name and not sure if it's still there. There are or were some outliers. Pastrami Queen I think, in the East 80s...

Are they Irish?
There is Irish mixed into my dad's side. More likely though my dad's family adopted it from others they encountered around southern NJ. All the family lines on my dad's side have been here for over 100-300 years, with Irish, Germans, etc mixed in.

Thanksgiving 2017: Turkey roasted in one of those plastic roasting bags, brined in the fridge a couple days, then seasoned with olive oil, salt, pepper, thyme, sage, and fresh rosemary. I put some slices of bacon and prosciutto on top so I wouldn't have to baste it, and because yum. Alice's Restaurant on the CD player. Stuffing made a day in advance in the slow cooker, with added Basque chorizo sausage and fresh mushrooms. Sweet potatoes, white not orange. Didn't want to see anything orange. Gingered fresh cranberry sauce with pecans. Turkey gravy made from the roast drippings. Wine. Pumpkin-pecan pie for dessert.

That wouldn't be unacceptable, but you need more stuffing.
It's all relative. I forget if I ever told this story here before, but one Thanksgiving (when I was about 12) my family ate at Top of the Sixes, a ritzy but actually not so great restaurant up in an NYC skyscraper. They served Turkey Soup, and I was chewing on a piece of turkey that wouldn't break down. I finally removed it from my mouth and realized it was a cigarette filter! My dad called the maitre d' over and told him, and they comped my dinner and sent a bottle of Champagne to the table. Ok.
Then about 15 years later my dad had Thanksgiving dinner catered from a nice, upper Eastside Manhattan place (we did do plenty of home-made Thanksgiving dinners, but there were just a few non-home-made ones over the years). So I'm eating stuffing, chewing on a mouthful, when I pull out a cigarette filter. WTF? Can you believe it? Don't remember how the caterer handled it. Something was worked out.
Anyway, my two times chewing on cigarette filters became the stuff of family legend...

^ You want to hear another story? My dad once had a party catered, and after the party he realized a piece of silver with some sentimental value was missing. About a week later the piece of silver arrived in the mail, and the package had a postage mark. My dad called the post office, and they told him where the postage mark was from: the office of the caterer. He called the caterer and told them, and again something was worked out but I don't know what. Apparently someone who worked for the caterer had lifted the piece of silver, then thought better of it and returned it using the postage meter stamp of the caterer's office.
