The Polite Force totally blew me away back in my shitty college apartment in 1992. Still does. Thick and meaty - complex - visceral - raging - ... ahhhh. I love moments like that when the first spin makes your head explode. I've only had a few moments like that- this was one for sure. Civil Surface is really great too... well... all of those albums are above and beyond for me. My fav Stewart music. Mont is simply amazing. Clive is a fantastic player too... or he wouldnt be in the band right?! lol

I like Newport Hospital, Contrasong, Seven is a Jolly Good time a lot, but the rest doesn't click. I'll have to try Civil Surface at some point.

EXACT same reaction here - albeit in 1994!
I got this from Jørn Andersen at a record fair in Bergen; he was still running his Colours back then, recently boosted by the (relative) success of the Änglagård issue. It was on this occasion that he also vendored me that precious French twofer of the first Softs - the one with the femi lips inside running legs spiralling on the ocean-blue cover.

Spun Polite Force today. Man, Newport Hospital is such a mighty track, everything else they did pales in comparison IMO.

Hey Frankie, good to see ya man.

No love for “I Will Be Absorbed”? That’s my favorite from the debut at the moment. Very chilled little tune.
For some reason, I had “Contrasong” playing in me noggin all day as things were anti at the Gulag today. Now onto The Fall’s “Contraflow”. Walk on, milk it.

Here is the amazing thing about this music if you lump it all into one big pyle - there is so much to discover, so much depth, so much detail, etc that discovery never seems to get stale. I've been in constant discovery mode with this music after years of doing these binges - to me it doesn't really get much better. Canterbury is life. And a city in Kent. Dave Stewart is not the only god, so is Pip Pyle.
