How about this:
How many formats do you own of certain albums? For DSOTM I can claim:
- LP
- Cassette
- CD (a few different mixes!)
- SACD
- DVD

I guess KC is where I'm guilty of this.
Poseidon, Lark's, Islands - vinyl, 30th CD, 40th CD/DVD
Lark's - vinyl, 30th CD, 40th CD, Lark's BOX
Starless - 30th CD, 40th CD, Starless BOX
Red - vinyl, CD, 40th CD/DVD, Road To Red BOX ... The "CD" version should have been the 30th but certain people can't follow specific directions in a wish list, so I got the '89 instead of the '01.
USA - vinyl, 30th CD, and the both of these repeated on the Road To Red DVD and BluRay
There's probably a bunch of Zappa that I've got 3 copies of, too.
Tull:
TAAB, vinyl, standard CD, box
I own zero copies of DSOTM.
I have multiple CDs for a several artists, especially Genesis - Altantic Gold Series, full Japan mini-LP CDs (two separate versions), the standard U.S. Boxes, the original CDs releases, regular CD releases, etc.
I have very few albums on more than one format. BUT, I know that the only album that I have on three formats is Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea, on original MC, LP, and CD, and purchased in that order. And those I have on two formats are mostly MC and LP, for example, Sleeps With Angels, and The Division Bell to name just two. As for different official issues, the only album I have different official issues of is DSOTM - original vinyl, 40th anno box, and the version in the Shine On box.
The only albums I own in three formats are, oddly enough, both by Brazilian artists:
Gilberto Gil - Realce
Beto Guedes - Amor de indio
I bought the LPs in Rio in 1980. I recorded them to cassette soon after, and for many years that has been my only means of listening to them.
This year I finally managed to get CD copies of both - the former as part of a 5-CD box set.
I have quite a few in these 4 formats:
8-track
LP
Cassette
CD
I have a couple in these 4 formats:
LP
Cassette
CD
Minidisc
I have a couple in these 4 formats:
LP
Cassette
CD
DTS 5.1
I have some KISS titles that cover these 5 formats:
8-track
LP
Cassette
CD
Hi Res Digital
I've only bought two pre-recorded cassettes and two 45-rpms...
All the rest I have are vinyls and CDs (a fair bit of the albums I own in duplicate come in this case)
oh yeah, I own one or two SACD (bought on purpose) and accidently a few DVD-A (through different boxsets - like the green Benesis boxset, for ex)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
Anybody has DAT ?
That was a good sounding format !
But both the media and the players/recorders were expensive.
I guess if I mention MP3 as a format, you'll take away my audiophile card.
Anyway, I sold off any vinyl I had years ago (with a few vinyl only selections excepted). But if we expand to include what we don't own any longer, one of the first that comes to mind was Queen - Night at the Opera which I had in vinyl, cassette, CD, and MP3.
Anything else would probably max out at 3 formats as I rarely had anything on both vinyl and cassette. And typically if I bought a remastered version of a CD, I would sell my previous CD version on eBay or Amazon (much to Mr. Carney's delight!).
WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.
DAT was never used as a format to release pre-recorded albums. DCC was and so was MC, albeit for probably less than a 100 albums each. But not DAT. Apart from home recording use DAT was really intended as a studio recording format to then use to make master CDs; at least in the London studios my band recorded/mixed/made CDs.
Except for LPs that come with a CD or download code I don't own anything in multiple formats. The few times I ever purchased something I already owned was to replace the previous copy, which was promptly discarded.
