“Pleasure and pain can be experienced simultaneously,” she said, gently massaging my back as we listened to her Coldplay CD.

Ok guys, I'm now going to get a bit more obscure, seeing as most of the more well known bands have already been mentioned

(also chaps lets not get hung up on the discussion of hard/heavy rock v metal that wasn't relevant for the 60s, and even as late as the late 70s in the UK at least, metal was still considered a subset of heavy rock anyway, and vice versa in that into the mid-80s a lot of hard rock was being called heavy metal e.g. Whitesnake, Europe, Bon Jovi...so let's leave all that aside...and focus on the sounds being made...is it hard? is it heavy? )

    1967
The Creation - Through My Eyes

    1969
Amon Duul - Im Garten Sandosa
Josefus - Get Off My Case

69/70 but released in 94, but I just have to include it because along with Sabbath and Josefus they were very early in the field of doom and non-blues heaviness.
Bulbous Creation a Kansas band that mixed psych and doom.

Plenty of heavy stuff on Johnny Winter's first few albums released in 1969.
