    Prog's biggest disappointments of 2015

    I am putting together my Top 10 albums for the year and I'm still wrestling with 8 through 10.

    In so doing however I have figured out my biggest disappointments:

    1. Spock's Beard "The Oblivion Particle" - not bad actually but not nearly as good as the last one. I've tried again and again but the
    songwriting is just not up to par.
    2. Beardfish "4626 Comfort Zone" - As above the songs were just not good enough. Never walked away from a listen humming anything.
    3. Steve Hackett "Wolflight" - so long since the last studio album and this is the best he could come up with?

    For me the biggest let downs were Riverside-Love, Fear & The Time Machine, which seems to lack energy and substance, and no more epic tracks. And Gazpacho-Moluk, which I find dull, and uninteresting. Steve Hackett-Wolflight I love Steve, but there's only a few tracks that got me going on this one. I love Jon Anderson too, but the new Anderson-Ponty band lacks energy, and IMO should not have included watered down versions of YES songs. Goblin Rebirth. Too Rock N' Roll for me. Rather see the original band and hear their classic dark soundtrack prog. Nektar-Time Machine. Nothing will ever surpass Recycled. Other than these there have been some really great prog releases in 2015.

    Echolyn's latest. Uninspired and dull.

    Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

    That new album from your favorite band? Yeah, too bad it sucked. You must really be disappointed.

    Ponty/Anderson would have made my list if I ever thought it was going to be good in the first place

    I'm more disappointed that Eddie "Zealot Pimp" Jobson still hasn't fixed that live UKZ CD he said he was going to.

    Yeah, the Echolyn disc is great IMO. I'm not going to list my #1 biggest disappointment here because one of the band members reads/posts here, and... well, I guess I'd feel bad!

    I haven't been disappointed with anything this year, some were just ok but nothing worse than that.

    If that record has anything watered down, it's Ponty classics with Anderson jabbering a bunch of airy/faerie lyrics over them that are goofy even for him.

    Echolyn's latest (don't even remember the title right now).
    Sanguine Hum's latest.
    The Tangent - but it's true for the last 3 or 4 albums (for me)

    Current prog is probably the smaller piece of my listening cake nowadays. So nothing from what I've heard (except Beardfish and Echolyn whose previous works have also been let-downs) disappointed me, as I've been stuck only on 10 mega recommended releases (in an ultra productive year).

    I do not like to speak abut disappointments. I prefer pleasant surprises and there have been plenty of them in 2015. Schnellertollermeier, Ghost Rhythms, Reve General, The Never Institute to name a few.

    Of course I bought a few albums that don't quite do it for me. Happens every year. Move on.

    No Yugen
    No Ske
    No Setna

    But besides that, no complaints

    But a new Yugen is already recorded. Maybe it will still be released this year.

    Riverside was my big disappointment...

    Didn't even bother to go see them when they were in the area...

    I was hoping for great things from Allas Sak, the new Dungen cd.I was underwhelmed.A couple of good tunes but overall, not nearly the quality i heard in the previous offering, Skit I Allt.

    YMMV.

    * Losing Edgar Froese
    * Losing Chris Squire
    * The thread about why festivals other than ProgDay suck
    * The threads about Phil Collins
    * The GG Octopus deluxe edition not having all multitracks available (sorry Anil, this was a dealbreaker for me)
    * Harold Budd being injured, missing performance at Big Ears
    If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:
