Didn't read the whole thread but I'm sure it's come up- for me it's absolutely "You can't always get what you want." I use that to teach my children.
Honorable mention goes to "Be happy with what you have to be happy with."
"I know....it's only rock n roll.....but I like it"
Alice Cooper's "I Love the Dead":
I love the dead before they rise,
No farewells, no goodbyes,
I never even knew your now rotting face.
While friends and lovers mourn your silly grave...
I have other uses for you darling.
It's very touching.
"And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision."
Occasional musical musings on https://darkelffile.blogspot.com/
"Like a story, we wish was never-ending, we know sometime we must reach the final page.
Still we carry on just pretending that there's always one more day to go."
I don't know if that's advice but it hits me in the feels. I'm always pretending. I shouldn't.
"Arf." -- Frank Zappa, "Beauty Knows No Pain" (live version)
"Or you could love"
- Marillion, A Few Words for the Dead
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
"The bottom has a rocky reputation".
Joe Walsh
The older I get, the better I was.
Fleetwood Mac - You can go your own way
Yes- When the world brings you down gotta play this living game
" - Change we must as surely time does changes call the course
RUSH - Sometimes we're too tender sometimes we're too tough
" - I guess we all have these feelings we can't leave unreconciled
" - You won't get wise with the sleep still in your eyes no matter what your dream might be
" - One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact
Alan Parsons Project - But the game never ends when your whole world depends on the turn of a friendly card
Rush probably have lots more. I'm sure YES does too. I might think of more later.
"Everything is bullshit but the open hand"--Bruce Cockburn
We are the grandchildren of apes, not angels
But only we are gifted with the eyes to see
On days without FEAR, when our heads are clear
That angels, we could be
(Marillion 2016)
Seasons will pass you by - I get up, I get down....
It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our lives.
And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
And The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs
Are the borders of our lives.
Yes we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives.
Paul Simon, "Dangling Conversation"
"God, please fuck my mind for good ... Death be damned. LIFE."
Cap'n Beefheart
Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

Take your time, remember when you do
There are days when people feel the same as you.
I bring time, and I can take you through
