On this day in 1969, prog was born ...

... well, I guess that depends on your definition of what prog is, but these two highly influential classics were released on October 10th, 1969!

    released in November 1967

In any case, irrespective of whether you consider Zappa prog or not, how can Hot Rats be one of the first two prog albums if it wasn't the first Zappa album?

Uncle Meat was avant-prog when prog was barely a thing.

    I agree!

It sure is fun, though, to point on that these two genre shaping albums were released the same day!

    Terrific album.

Zappa had far more experimental releases before this, but this is by far his most influential album, IMO.

Yep, silly genre boundaries aside - these albums rule!

In all seriousness, with these albums (DoFP included), it's like trying to choose a favorite from of one of your children. It's a bad idea because no one will be happy.

I never really considered Hot Rats to be "Prog," but otherwise an eventful Fall season, with Soft Machine II, Aerosol Grey Machine, and Rare Bird's first album

I would never have guessed that ITCOTCK and Hot Rats were released on the same day. I recall the title track from the KC album being played on a somewhat progressive AM station; if asked to pick the year, i would have guessed 1968, but '69 sounds believable. On the other hand, I used to see Weasels album around a lot during the late 60's, and hear it talked about my afficionados, but I never heard of Hot Rats until 1972. Obviously I am not calling the above release dates into question, just noting how perception and memory can be wrong.

Well, that proves my point - memory can be unreliable!

Whatever the release dates, for one reason or another I was aware of the Weasels album long before I was aware of Hot Rats.

After your prog career ends you'll start a new career doing stand up comedy.
