    Of Monsters and Men

That's the extent of all that I know about Icelandic music.

Emiliana Torrini is another. Vocals, dreamy avant-indie stuff. Pretty nice.

The group AlasNoAxis involves two Icelandic musicians (Hilmar Jensson, guitar, and Skúli Sverrisson, bass) alongside two Americans (Chris Speed, sax, and Jim Black, drums/leader). It may be purely psychological based on knowing the nationality of half the band, but the music has always struck me has having a very "Icelandic" vibe to it. Here's a sample of them performing a composition from their first album:

Þursaflokkurinn - the first 3 albums (out of four are very good ! think, GG, Focus, Area)
KÜKL - The Eye (their first album, is kind of Crimson art rock mixed with punk - Björk sings)
Sugarcubes first album (produced by Ray Shulman - and Björk sings)
Björks 2 first solo albums are great, after that I lost interest.
Sigur Ros is not my cuppa, but its quality music.

    Greetings,

Eik is one of my favorites (although the rest of the album is more funk-rock than prog):

Although a bit on the early/proto side, Trúbrot is also quite nice. This is their best album IMO:

Also, Súld is a little-known fusion band (with one of the Eik members that wrote the track I posted above). Here's a link to their second album:

    Cheers,

Here is the Gnosis search: http://gnosis2000.net/cgi-bin/gnosearch.cgi

    Do the following:
    1. Select "VIEW TOP RATED ALBUMS"
    2. Under "2. Select a Country or Region:" select Iceland
    3. Select "Do the Search"

You will get back all the albums in Gnosis that are cataloged as being from Iceland, which should be more than PA

I recommend Hinn Íslenski Þursaflokkur and...um...

Come to think of it, I can’t really think of any other Icelandic bands I really dig. That Eik track that was posted was by far the best thing they ever did. Apart from a couple of Canterbury-ish instrumentals on their other album Speglun, the rest of their output is dire. Trúbrot are OK in a sort of Beatles-influenced conceptual rock mode (I’ve only ever heard Lifun, can’t comment on the others). Náttúra are decent, yet overrated (probably because of their nationality). Icecross are ick, their “proggier” spinoff band Pelican are even worse.

But definitely get those first to HÍÞ albums. They’re a special kind of...special. Mainly trad Icelandic folk tunes done prog-rock style, but not done in a predictable way.
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

Thursaflokkur (all of it, basically!), Eik (second album), Trubrot (espec Lifun...) and their (quite good) offshoot Nattura, and the strangely unknown Manar - these were the best 70s progressive bands from there. Svanfridur, Jonas & Einar, Spilverk and Pelican were fairly OK, I'm not much of a fan of Icecross or Odmenn.

Modern acts that are essential include (other than Björk, of course) Sigur Ros, Mum, Amiina, Slowblow and Eldberg. Todmobile are OK as well.

Manar were heavily influenced by Trubrot, The Beatles, Procol Harum and the Pretty Things anno Parachute, so don't expect pyrotechnics or flashes here.

If the progarchives and gnosis lists aren't large enough for you then here is the one from rateyourmusic (975 albums):

This one should keep you busy for a while.

FWIW, Norway's Magic Pie's current lead singer, Eirikur Hauksson (also sings in the Ken Hensley Band), is from Iceland rather than Norway. The languages are close enough.

Eirikur also made a more hard rock/heavy metal album in Icelandic with his old band from Iceland.

    Ólöf Arnalds

    http://olofarnalds.com/

Information on Sudden Elevation, featuring Skuli:

Recorded in her native Iceland, Sudden Elevation, Ólöf Arnald’s third full album and her first sung entirely in English, captures a rare and idiosyncratic songwriting talent in full bloom.
From the breezily skipping rhythm of opener German Fields to the pealing vocals of closer, Perfect, Sudden Elevation’s particular brand of heartache is magical, dislocated and otherworldly; its harmonies complex and quietly electrifying.
Produced again by long-time collaborator, Skúli Sverrisson, Sudden Elevation was largely recorded in a late autumn 2011 stint in a seaside cabin in Hvalfjörður (literally ‘Whale-fjord’), in the west of Iceland.

Wow, that's a tall order. I can't think of anything from Iceland, but there are other artists on ECM in a somewhat similar vein to Lena Willemark. There's also a pretty interesting Scandinavian folk-related scene you might like since you like this.
    WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.
