WHAAAT? No ______? and nothing by _____? And where's _____?

    The man has no taste.

Seriously though, it's a bit of a shock to see a Prog Top 100 that does not contain one single Genesis album.

excellent list, even if I don't agree with a few of those

Genesis would not make my top 100 either... Relayer OTOH... perhaps
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

    054. Et Cetera - Et Cetera (1976) From Quebec. Gentle-Giant-esque (but less diverse) with lots of counterpoint instrumentally and vocally (French male and female vocals). Some good soloing, particularly in the keyboard. The drums seem really poorly recorded to me, but overall it's a good (not great, IMO) album.

    063. Sympozion - Kundabuffer. From Israel. Really well played and arranged instrumental music, mostly guitar led, but with keys and some recorders as well. Angular with lots of chord changes and creative twists and turns. Two of the tunes have vocals in Hebrew, which I like as a change of pace. Great music.

Koenjihyakkei is a Japanese Zeuhl band, particularly excellent, fairly manic compared to most zeuhl with screechy Japanese vocals, love it.

Panzerpappa are one of the current crop of Norwegian Avant tinge jazz fusiony bands.

mirthKon are a young Oakland California Avant Metal band with a sense of humor and plenty of fun.

Yes, sorry Genesissy, Marlion, Porktree, Sksbeard, Dreater, And some other obvious omissions, but this was done with more than a little tongue and cheek on my part, After seeing them get far too many placings in "other" threads I thought this list could get some other find artists at least on some kind of list, albeit, not the official "last say" on all things progressive. The next 100 could easily omit many of the top selling progressive rock bands as well.

As for VAN OTTERDYKE?, well, truth be told they are unofficially 101, so they didn't make the cut. Sorry, it was hard to narrow things down to this list, I mean, no Boud Deun, no Zao, no Rush, no Volker Kriegel, no Naikaku, no Le Orme, the list is full of gross omissions.

These are an interesting note. Those Chileans are usually amazing overall (and always were), and the Matraz album is simply one of the very finest prog-metal "proper" (meaning non-tech/extreme) albums I know. Nice to see the Spaniards too, with Sentiments my fave Iceberg (although normally designated second or third on lists like this), and Shisspa is IMO the greatest Koenji release by far. DFA's 4 too is usually not people's fave with the band, but definitely mine. Panzerpappa are always good to have on a list (), and the Sympozion is sickly solid! Bonfire Goes Bananas is seldom seen, yet it's SUCH a killer instrumental progressive beast - easily outdoing anything by Focus or Finch in my book. Jet Lag's Dimensione Ottica is a complete retro-progressive stoner jazzy slayer, while Floating Opera is a rare pick by one of the most accomplished groups to ever assemble - yet also probably their most intriguing! Great to have Pochakaite on board as well.

I've got about 90 of these, and I'd probably have about 30-or-so of those included on my own list.

The rest would probably be various versions of the Van Otterdyke remixed by Steve Nilson and with Neal Stolt on added mallet testicles and 'tron kazoo.

And here he is finally, prog's very own equivalent to Falco:

"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

I don't know em all but I like both MJ's and MT's lists much much better than the ones in which conventional wisdom normally prevails. for me, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and so forth are just no brainers. I don't need a list for them. understandably, they're great for someone who is really just entering the progressive rock scene. I think it's great however when obscure, newer or just favorite bands are given some lofty recognition by others. Scrotum, I'll have to check out that Matraz. me likes some proper prog metal. any more similar recs?

the Matraz disc is really good proggosaurus. It's their 2nd one called Gritare with the female vocalist who can really sing! The first one has male vocals. I haven't heard it but it doesn't seem to rate as highly as the 2nd

appreciate it MT! prog metal with good female vox. that's even better. I'm listening now and it is good. she does sound great. there's a language barrier for me but thankfully, I never let that inhibit my enjoyment.
