Dalek returns (the band, not the Doctor's enemy)

Didn't even realize they were on hiatus...

I've always appreciated their dark/angry soundscapes, and while I'm not exactly a HUGE nut for rap...Dalek's lyrics are generally pretty engaging stuff. Based on the video above, it sounds like good stuff.

Also interesting to hear they are looking at some sort of collab with Blut Aus Nord.

Anyway, thought I'd put this here for the 2-3 people who don't hate this stuff outright

I've always been intrigued my them (and other "trick-hop" conceptualists like Flying Lotus, ClouDDead and such), but I wouldn't pose as someone who really gets it. Yet yeah, definitely HIGHLY powerful and dense sonic metres with intense nerve and presence when you listen to it. It takes both guts, stamina and a certain artistic obsession to realize audioworks as original as these.

Agreed on the "getting it" part...but on whatever level I can appreciate it, it's damned fine stuff. 'Black Smoke Rises' and their 'Untitled' from a few years back really challenged my notions of what rap could potentially be.

A band (I always thought it was just one dude, but what do I know) that I've been meaning to check out for several years. Perhaps now is the time.

I wonder if they're still on Patton's Ipecac label.
I want to dynamite your mind with love tonight.

    Hard to say, honestly...they might.

Start with From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots; I did, and was instantly hooked by it. It also prompted me to buy another one to my then 15-year old son (Abandoned Language, I believe), who played it to a couple of his hiphop buddies who were in turn completely startled by it. From my kid's description of their reaction, I almost got the impression that Dälek might be the Magma to Snoop or 50 Cent's Supertramp.

I'm with SS on starting with Filthy Tongues. It's a stunningly strong piece of work.

Their other three "regular" albums, Absence, Abandoned Language and Gutter Tactics have killer songs (the opener on Absence is wonderfully dark and throbbing), although I still find Filthy Tongues to be a step up.

If one needs a bit of "prog" cred to help out (not saying you, but any lurkers here ), then go with their collab album with Faust, "Derbe Respect, Alder." Some great moments in there.
