almost impossible to narrow down to a ten best, but somewhere I would find a way to include Short Man's Room by Joe Henry

if we can include Live albums,(and assuming we are not including classical music) then.....

Springsteen---Live 75-85 (includes good chunks of the essential Bruce albums Darkness and Born to Run, which would be here if no live albums)
Neil Young-- Weld (again, covers for multiple essential NY albums)
The Who--Live at Leeds (expanded version) (if no live albums, Whos' Next Deluxe edition)
    The Band--The Band
    Beatles--Abbey Road
    Sinatra---Come Dance with Me
    Steely Dan--Aja
    Chicago--Live at Carnegie Hall
Stones-Exile on Main Street or Let it Bleed or Sticky Fingers (dammit, that's why you can't restrict these lists to ten)
Allman Bros-Live at Fillmore East (expanded)

Excluding jazz, classical and soundtracks - and in the order I think of them rather than quality - and restricted to one per artist:

    Marvin Gaye, What's Going On

    Dylan, Blonde on Blonde

    Springsteen, Tunnel of Love

    The Who, Quadrophenia

    Bobbi Gentry, The Delta Sweete

Paul Simon, The Rhythm of the Saints

    The Band, The Band

    Cold Chisel, Circus Animals

    The Drones, Havillah

    Joni Mitchell, Hejira

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

To avoid listing 50 albums, I am going to cheat and declare Pink Floyd, Zeppelin and the Who prog. Almost considered Sabbath and Steely Dan as well. I can't include jazz or blues either.

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    Steely Dan - Aja
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties
    U2 - Joshua Tree
    R.E.M. - Document
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
    Beatles - Abbey Road
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Assorted Love Songs
    The Band - The Band

Love - Forever Changes (could easily be construed as prog)
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
    " " - Countdown To Ecstacy
The Who - Live At Leeds (Expanded)
    " " - Quadrophenia
    Nazz - debut s/t
The Left Banke - Pretty Ballerina/Walk Away Renee (also in the prog vicinity)
Laura Nyro - The First Songs (original release s/t)
Quicksilver Messenger Service - debut s/t
    XTC - Oranges & Lemons

2 alternates (in the event that Forever Changes & Pretty Ballerina meet the prog criteria by consensus)

    Pretty Things - SF Sorrow
Bob Dylan - Hwy 61 Revisited

This is what I came up with after extending "prog" to include "proggy electronica" (TD, Vangelis), instrumental virtuoso rock (Satriani), and jazz-fusion (Brand X ):

    XTC- Skylarking
The Dukes of Stratosphear - Chips from the Chocolate Fireball
Duran Duran - Liberty, "The Wedding Album", Pop Trash, Astronaut
The Beatles - Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album
The Moody Blues - The Other Side of Life

These lists are addictive but also frustrating. I could do an honest top 50 but my top 10 is pretty much subject to change from day to day. I have an emergency iPod nano that is loaded with the essentials for unexpected down time, or being stuck at my mother-in-law's. It's got most of my essential artists but it's still a good sized list.

I can't think of a single non-prog rock album that would make it to my desert island list.

    My list would be something like;

    Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Keith Jarret - The Celestial Hawk
Stravinsky - Le Sacre du Printemps
Elliot Carter - String Quartet 1 and 2
Ralph Towner - Solstice - Sound and Shadows
    Penderecki - Violin Concerto #2
Bartok - Concerto for Strings, Percussion and Continuo
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Art Ensemble of Chicago - Full Force
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
