Thoughtful interview. I hope the tour is a big success!

Yup, Lukather, 'nuff said for sure. He's a beast, and grossly overlooked around here because he's in Toto. If he plays while my guitar gently weeps, I dare you NOT to, he kills it! I hope those in doubt will be pleasantly surprised by the the chops these guys bring...Yes is in for a long night.

Steve Howe Says Yes Is Happy to Be Able to Pay Tribute to Chris Squire on Summer Tour with Toto

A little over a month after the death of founding Yes bassist Chris Squire, the legendary prog-rock group is set to return to the road for a joint North American tour with Toto that kicks off Friday in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Yes guitarist Steve Howe says the trek will give the band the chance to salute Squire -- who was the only constant member of the group over its 45-plus-year career -- while also allowing fans to commiserate over his passing.

"It is pretty exceptional that Chris has been at all those Yes shows [over] all those years, so we're gonna have to respect that and pay some tribute to that, which we're very happy to be able to do," Howe tells ABC Radio. "And let people kind of find a way, an inner voice to express and get over and hopefully heal some of the sadness that's gone down."

Howe said the decision to carry on with the tour was made easier because Yes already had brought ex-band member Billy Sherwood to fill in for Squire after Chris announced in May that he'd been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and would be unable to join the group on its already scheduled joint trek.

"We started projecting that we would have to do this just like we're doing it now, actually, with Billy," Steve explains. "But obviously, what we were hoping was that Chris was gonna be returning and, obviously, with his passing, that changed everything." Squire died on June 27 at the age of 67.

Howe says he and his Yes band mates had some hesitation and discussions before eventually deciding to go forward with the trek.

"We thought if we don't stay on course, we're gonna lose the plot," he maintains. "And the plot might be that there would be a different future or no future for Yes, I suppose, is another way of sort of cruelly putting it."

As for how Sherwood is fitting in with the band, Steve says he's "doing great," adding, that he's a musician "who will not go to a piece of work without thoroughly preparing himself."

Meanwhile, Howe says that, unlike the last few Yes tours, the band won't be playing any full albums on the North American outing.

"We're very happy to drop the album shape and give ourselves a chance to kick songs around," he points out. And we've got a nice set list with some songs that we either haven't played for a long time or…rarely play, [and] we're coloring that with obviously songs that [are popular]."

With regard to teaming up with Toto, a band known for having a more mainstream pop sound than Yes, Howe says a lot of thought was put into how well the pairing might work together.

"This was a long road to find the right balance of an act that was neither predictable or completely unpredictable," Steve explains. "So the marriage had to have something about it, the music had to have something about it…so certain parts of the jigsaw just had to fit." (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)

Thanks for the article, Rand, and the earlier one, but might I suggest that you just post a link to the original URL? It's kinda breaking copyright to cut and paste the whole thing here.

It's nice to hear Steve acknowledge that Yes even existed in the 80s, but I wouldn't count on anything so Rabin-centric.

I figure they will at least bring out rhythm of love to have some more 80's stuff to match Toto. but we will see what other rarely played "good" songs could they pull out does machine messiah count as rarely played cause I would be happy to see that again?

So am I. How long I stay for Yes's set depends on their setlist. I'm there mainly for Toto at this point.

From the interviews that Rand has posted, it sounds like Yes is (finally) going to mix it up a bit, so I'm interested to see what they do. I'd like to see what they do for Squire, too.

I'm going to saturday in Newark

should be interesting, bittersweet and (hopefully) surprising

seeing them the last several post Anderson tours has been an exercise in cognitive dissonance: not a judgement, but a fact that these lyrics and melodies were so a part of the Jon Anderson mystique. now seeing the Yes show without Squire's balancing fatherly presence it's going to be even more of a head trip.

    tempus fugit indeed

I'm all about anything from Drama, which would make the show and tours all that more bittersweet. the material I most wanted them to revisit, esp after having Downes back in the band. such a missed opportunity these last few years

    and it was great!

Downes and Davison only performed Machine Messiah on the short Spring 2012 Pacific Rim Tour. 12 dates in April and that was it for MM

that and Tempus are the only tracks done since 1980. the next UK full album tour should be a treat
