Thread: New to Univers Zero

Can't really add too much to what's already been said, but I don't think you can really go wrong with any UZ.

Their most recent one Phosphorescent dreams is pretty similar to UZED or Heatwave in that it is more "rock" than some of their others.

My personal favorite is Clivages, which features the partial return of Andy Kirk into the fold. He's playing guitar rather than keys, but he does bring a composition (Warrior, one of the best UZ tracks ever) to the fold.

I quite enjoy Relapse which covers the UZED and Heatwave era. So while not essential, if you like those two, this live release will be more UZ goodness.

People should learn to air drum that instead of "Tom Sawyer", or at least tap out the rhythms on their girlfriend's thighs when they're bored in church or at funerals.

I just ordered the rest of them. I'm obsessed.

Nice man. I remember buying about 5 or 6 GG albums (actually CD's) before I had even heard a note - I knew I was gonna dig 'em just from what I was reading about them. There is nary a bad UZ disc - some may resonate more than others but they're all good and unique.

Symphonie Pour le Jour ou Bruleront les Cites, the 1980 rerecording of their 1976 obscure debut, is one of THE defining so-called "chamber rock" works. Although the actual "rock" quotient may be even less than with UZero, the sheer energy, intricacy and artistic determination - along with the intense atmosphere of this - is incendiary.

They got more electric and "industrial" later on, before pretty much venturing into composed electronica in the 90s.

AZ is very diverse in style, for a start I would suggest Phase IV and Berlin, then you might get an idea of the 'bandwidth'.

    My favorites are

    Phase IV (1982)
    Les espaces inquiets (1983)
Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer (1985, for a ballet by Roland Petit)
    Berlin (1987)
    Marathonnerre I (1993)
    Marathonnerre II (1993)

If you explore Present, a good place to start might be the first album - Triskadekaphobie - the recent reissue features them "covering" (is it really a cover is 75% of the band is from UZ?) two UZ songs including a ripping version of Dense that has Roger Trigaux covering the violin and double reeds on guitar. Excellent.

Then you'll want to move on to the reissue of Le Poison - which not only has a full concert as a bonus disc but also has some resurrected video. Quality is not so great but the mere fact that it exists is great! Daniel Denis is a joy to watch on the drumkit

The only Art Zoyd I have is

Symphonie Pour Le Jour Où Brûleront Les Cités
    Musique Pour L'Odyssée
    Génération Sans Futur

They're all great, I get the feeling I'll be picking up some more in France in September.

    Phase IV
Le Mariage Du Ciel Et De L'Enfer

    Les Espaces Inquiets
    is also worth geting
of all the later stuff the only one I still consider worth your attention is Berlin

Those two are also worth mentionning, but IMHO, less of a priority.

Yeah, the first 6 AZ are essential. I like them all up to and including about half of Haxan. Thierry Zaboitzeff left after that and I really don't enjoy them since. I appreciate that they do their own thing but it's not something that I'm into. I've bought them up until House of Usher but I think I'm not buying any more (unless Dr. Zab joins up for a new album).

Not to go too off-topic here but I agree AZ weren't the same without Zaboitzeff; his solo albums are great and Zoydian in places.
