Since we're mentioning American musical mavericks, here's a man whose works for player piano are amazing.Conlon Nancarrow.I recently saw a marathon performance of all of Nancarrow's Studies for Player Piano at The Whitney Museum in NYC.They were played on an authentic Ampico player piano, similar to the ones Nancarrow used in his Mexico City studio.

It was an experience i'll always cherish. Here's one of the works. Strap yourself in, it's like riding a rocket.
