Steve Walsh by a long, long way.

Dennis gets a bit too theatrical/Broadway and Tommy Shaw, as someone said, certainly 'does the job' as a singer but doesn't really grab me.

Shaw's voice is way too strident for my ears

Walsh was an absolute monster in the 70s

but none compare to Francesco Di Giacomo in the realm of Symph Rock vocalists
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Never got into Styx, and was only a little into Kansas, but Walsh is easily my pick. Tommy is excellent, but never really struck me as a full-on "lead singer". More of a "guitarist with a great voice" like Trevor Rabin. DeYoung - I could never stomach that guy, and he's the main reason I didn't get into Styx. Seemed like he should be doing Broadway or something, not rock. I actually kind of like the current touring version of Styx better than the "classic" lineup.

DeYoung was better in the early days, before he got all B'way. He always had some of that B'way showman going on, but it didn't fully emerge till around the time of Crystal Ball.

For some kickass early DeYoung, check out stuff like "Christopher, Mr. Christopher" or "Father O.S.A."

He played some pretty badass keys too, such as the pipe organ take on Bach's "Little Fugue in G" and the Hammond solo on
    "Young Man."

You can take the first 4 Styx albums and make a very nice double-LP length CD out of them. When it came to the early stuff, when they were good, they were very good, but when they were bad (i.e. "22 Years") they were awful.

In their prime, DDY, SW and TS. Latter has aged better than either of the first two IMO.

Tommy Shaw would be my choice, though I like all three. Shaw has a voice that translates well across different styles. He can rock out, but also has quite a soulful voice that translates well for slower songs, blues, etc.

And LOL to those who just *can't* resist but to pipe in with other choices.

Hate vocalist like those so I'll pass on voting. ...but I guess if there is enough cowbell to drown them out...might be interesting.

It really took over for me by 'Paradise Theater'...given the title of the album I suppose that was intentional, but I preferred the Dennis of 'Suite Madame Blue'. That song was a real shock to me when I first heard it...the Styx things I'd heard before that were nothing like it.
