Yeah, the Grobschnitt Palast show is really cool, but from what i gather, unfortunately it wasn't a full length and full pyrotechnics and full theatrical show (though this demands confirmation, cos I wouldn't know for sure, since i've never seen them)

As for Nugent, I'd rather not know. Most likely guttermouth would've made some unpleasant remarks between songs

Yes, I would say that I'm mocking. I'm all for copyright, but only if there is use of the material. I am not in favor of people holding onto copyright and then warehousing the material with no intention of publication.

I have a burn of the Grobschnitt show. It has a long version of Solar Musik, the Deutsch version of one of the Jumbo tracks and a track from Merry-Go-Round.

Solar Musik has theatrics and pyro, though.

I'd agree that I doubt that it's a full concert.

I have a Rory Gallagher DVD box set with a number of Rockpalast shows on it as well. Some great stuff on that one!

It is more or less a full concert, but not as extended as the concerts they did on their own. The Rockpalast festivals had several groups playing, so the length of the concerts was reduced and Grobschnitt also had to cut back a lot on theatrics.

I have a Saga festival appearance on VHS from the Behaviour tour ('85). The YT description just says "Rock am Ring", but I'm wondering if this wasn't also a Rockpalast show.

I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

I have a Rockpalast, Thin Lizzy concert on DVD. I like it more than the Live & Dangerous DVD.

The YT of McGuinn's Thunderbyrd show seems to display evidence of mucho Bolivian marching powder consumption.

no, that’s “rock pop in concert”, the competing format on 2nd german TV (ZDF). “rockpalast” was produced for WDR/ARD.

i have done a lot of (professional) work on the release of archival TV footage and i have lobbied for the RPiC vaults to be raided properly. sadly there are quite a few legal issues and the only one i do recall having been released is JETHRO TULL’s “jack in the green” DVD.

here's another gem … RAMMS+EIN when they were little. in daylight and with only minimal pyromania. a year later they were larger than life and headlined the same festival with proper production and no holds barred (also televised for “rockpalast”):

Another one good was Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, circa Couldn't Stand The Weather. They're playing an outdoor festival, but it was recorded for Rockpalast. Great, great performance. Amazing that a guy who was bombed as SRV reputedly was during that era could still play like that.

His demons weren't really evident in his work until the spotty Soul to Soul album and the disaster of a live album that followed that.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

WHAT??? A Jon Anderson show on Rockpalast??? What year? 1980 or 1982? (I presume it must be one of those as he didn't play live solo other years until much later). Is there a way to get this?

David Bowie did one in the late 1970s.

The European TV channels not only had the foresight to film all these artists live, but also- crucially- to keep it!

I believe that British TV needs a similarly open-ended live broadcast programme like this, focussing on just one artist.

It's from the Song of Seven tour (1980), and not available commercially that I've ever seen. It was in the VHS trading circles for ages and is now up on YT (broken into individual songs). My VHS copy is about 10 generations downstream from the best stuff on YT so that's the best way to enjoy it.

Here's "Song of Seven" from that show. Amazing because it was not included in any of the boots I ever saw so it's a nice find. Not the best live performance (tuning issues abound and the mix is odd). But still -- essential for Jon fans.

RIP Morris Pert and Chris Rainbow.

I actually rather liked Soul To Soul. I wish that ride out solo on Life Without You was a little longer, but what else do you expect on a studio record, especially one from that era? Of course it fades out too soon. But the rest of the album I thought was pretty good.

The live album I never got, because they never put out a CD version that had Life Without You on it (it was on the original release of the album, but when they put the CD out, they left that one track off).

In their heyday the long Rockpalast nights where blockbuster events in Germany.

They where broadcasted also live on Radio too, so you crancked up your stereos wile watching the TV (lots of envolved).

Band like ZZ Top or Mother's Finest who where hardly known in Germany before, caused a lot of vinyl dealers a nervous breakdown because
their stores where invaded by people asking for Albums of those bands that they didn't have in stock after these shows.

Of cause the Grobschnitt Show is not representative of one of their "real" concerts which lastet easily up to 3 hours.
(i was lucky to see one of their final shows).

I also love the show with Steve Hillage and Rainbow ('77) still with Dio.

The only thing about that one is he plays a Les Paul for almost all of the show, only switching over to his Strat after breaking a string during It's All Too Much (which wasn't even part of the original broadcast).

    Can. "Paperhouse." Beat Club, 1971.

One of my Krautrock youtube favorites. That version kicks the album version's ass. You can even almost understand what Damo was singing.

I'd still love to see a complete version and maybe make a complete matrix of video sources. At least knowing the original setlist would be a help. I'd rather have bad analog quality without digital artifacts than a good analog copy with digital artifacts. Ah well, if anyone has a full copy I'd be greatly interested into getting a copy!
