Frameshift's "An Absence of Empathy" fits perfectly with your #2 but it's probably not what you were thinking of.
8. Discipline - KC
2. Cruel To Be Kind - Brinsley Schwarz
I think Triscuits has it, but I'll try
8: Mathematics (Cherry Ghost)
I asked this question before and NOBODY got it:
Name the 70's songs with seagulls-sounds in them,
(should have been easy for the people here)
Doesn't The Who's Quadrophenia have seagulls (or gulls) sounds?
Real seagulls? Or slide guitar seagulls? Because that could be Layla and Free Bird along with a lot of others...
I also have an idea there's at least one Elton John song - Sweet Painted Lady - that features that sound effect. Also, "The seagulls were screaming" in the song Sails, from Elton's first album, but they are only mentioned there, not heard.
Likewise, Harry Chapin sings about "the screeching of the gulls" in the song Dogtown, but I don't think gulls are actually heard.
Drifting slightly off topic, Judy Collins sings a traditional song "Farewell to Tarwathie", on which there is no instrumental accompaniment; the only backing is recordings of whale sounds.
