It didn't 'flop' commercially by any means, having a US Number 1 single on it to boot. You're right about the critical reception, which was driven by agenda. I might go for that as my favourite myself. His next couple *were* very wobbly but 'Ram' is marvellous.
I think McCartney's later work is consistently underrated. For some reason his newer albums are no more than politely received whilst Bob Dylan's latter-day output is fawned over. It should be the other way round in my view.
