Porcupine Tree - What Would You Select for a Compilation CD?

I burned one for the car stereo a few years ago and it got damaged. Time to burn another. But as I'm trying to come up with the running order I'm curious as to what everyone else would consider as must haves.

Just one CD spanning their entire catalog?

It was hard to get down to a CD. This is what I came up with:

    1. Even Less (fade out last minute)
    2. Trains
    3. Lazarus
    4. The Sound of Muzak
    5. Waiting Phase One
    6. Drown With Me
    7. Blackest Eyes
    8. Arriving Somewhere Not Here
    9. My Ashes
    10. Anesthetize (fade out at 12:15)
    11. Stranger By the Minute (This Is No Rehearsal can work here instead and is a minute shorter)
    12. Shesmovedon (Deadwing version)
    13. Collapse the Light Into Earth

The iTunes running time is 86.6 minutes, but you save 6.5 minutes with the fadeouts, so you can either swap track 11 or be tight with the edits to make it fit.

Do not ask to go to 74

I'd be open to a two disk set. My CD case in the car has several two CD comps. In a couple cases I took all the songs my wife can stand from a particular artist and jam another with stuff I can play when she's not in the car (Pink Floyd, Rush, Marillion).

I can see opening with "Even Less" but "Blackest Eyes/Trains" is an unbelievable one-two punch. YMMV.

It is. I was trying to avoid it because it's so intuitive, but if you swap the order of Even Less and Blackest Eyes, Even Less fades into Arriving which probably works better there too.

smcfee's list is pretty good, perhaps a little too skewed to later PT but not a bad summation. I have one disagreement: Anesthetize should be included in full, or not at all.

I think you could drop one of the two "epics", Arriving.. and Anesthetize. Personally I would drop Arriving. That would leave room for one or two representative tracks from their earlier period. I'd suggest "Up the Downstair" and/or "Burning Sky" and/or "Synesthesia". After "The Sound of Muzak" would be a good place to insert those. I'll let you do the maths to figure out the playing time.

    How about chronological?

    "Waiting Phase One"
    "Even Less"
    "Piano Lessons"
    "Pure Narcotic"
    "Stranger by the Minute"
    "Blackest Eyes"
    "Trains"
    "The Sound of Muzak"
    "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here"
    "Mellotron Scratch"
    "Open Car"
    "Anesthetize (edited)"
    "Time Flies"

I think the double CD version of Sky Moves Sideways is already the perfect Porcupine Tree compilation

Is it still the 1990's? I just put iTunes on RANDOM; Porcupine Tree, and shift the car into drive.

    I dunno.

As long as it doesn't have Four Chords That Made A Million on it, I'm good.

Would probably have to be a 4 pack to do it justice....Psych Era----Pop Era----Metal Era---Epics

    .
I wondered how many out there were like me who fades out. I wasn't sure where I did it but it must be 12:15.

Now, even more radical, I cut the first few (3?) minutes as well. great in the middle...

Well, if you prefer it that way, that's your prerogative... but it seems to me that chopping pieces out of Anesthetize is destroying the whole point of it. for example, the middle part is my least favourite part, but no way would I want it removed; the sudden transition from loud crashing chords to quite languid music is magical, as though someone has just been anaesthetised.

The 2-disc Stars Die compilation is a pretty good encapsulation of the "psych" era, so all you need do now is decide what goes on discs 3 & 4 to cover the era from Stupid Dream onwards. I'd want "What Happens Now?" to appear in there somewhere, as i consider that the only essential track on Nil Recurring.

    LOL, indeed.

But just to play along, here's my "PT Mix Disk" (in order)...

    Nine Cats
    Synesthesia
    Bornlivedie/Signify (Coma Divine)
    Waiting Phase One
    Dark Matter
    Even Less
    Pure Narcotic
    Tinto Brass
    Blackest Eyes
    Gravity Eyelids
    Deadwing
    Stop Swimming

    Total time: 77 minutes

Guess everyone can see which period of PT I'm most fond of.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

    OK: here's my "Boxed Set"

    Discs 1 & 2: Stars Die compilation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_...1%E2%80%931997

    Discs 3 & 4: "Time Flies".

    Disc 3:

    Don't Hate Me
    Pure Narcotic
    Baby Dream in Cellophane
    Buying new Soul
    In Formaldehyde
Even Less (full 2-part version from Recordings)
    Lightbulb Sun
    Shesmovedon
Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it Is recycled
    Russia On Ice
    Drown With Me

    Disc 4:

    Trains
    The Sound of Muzak
    Meantime
    Lazarus
    Arriving Somewhere But not Here
    The Start of Something Beautiful
    Anesthetize (ALL of it)
    Way Out of Here
    What Happens Now?
    Flicker
    Time Flies

Note that this is not necessarily a list of my favourites, just a program that could work well. For example I don't think Meantime is all that great, but it's good to have a couple of tracks that are not available on the main albums.

My list will require some creative editing. I'm thinking about re-ripping all of these as wav files and editing everything together as a single file to fit a CD. Should be fun.
    1. Bornlivedie
    2. Time Flies [Edit]
    3. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
    4. Lazarus
    5. Trains
    6. Cheating The Polygraph
    7. Pure Narcotic
    8. Fear Of A Blank Planet
    9. Prodigal
    10. Drawing The Line
    11. Blackest Eyes
    12. Shesmovedon
    13. The Sound Of Muzak

Sticking with one disk, I go with:

    Bornlivedie/Signify
    Halo
    Drown With Me
Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled
    Orchidia
    Sleep Together
    Fadeaway
    Moonloop (Coda)
    Blackest Eyes
    Futile
    NIL RECURRING
    Even Less
    Dark Matter

iTunes says 75 minutes. I'm not sure I found an order I like yet.

This is a great list. It may need some slight tweeking but an overall great list to start with.

Thanks. The track sequencing could perhaps be better, if one abandoned the attempt to make it more or less chronological.

    Mine would have to include:
    Gravity Eyelids
    So Called Friend
    Blackest Eyes
    Lazarus
    Open Car

My compilation does not include my own very favourite Porcupine tree song. That's how dedicated I am to makiing it a good compilation rather than a personal "best of".
