Thread: The Stones best album?

    The Stones best album?

Never have been a big Stones fan but then again I haven't heard much save the 'hits'!
I note that a Deluxe edition of Sticky Fingers is due to be released.
Just curious to know which is considered their Masterpiece?

My 'best' is somewhere between the first one and Goats Head Soup. that's quite a winning streak.

If you exclude Satanic Majesties, I would say the run from Between The Buttons up through Sticky Fingers at least, would constitute their best albums. I'd also throw in Tattoo You, as well.

The pre-Between The Buttons records are mostly good, but not great, with too many throwaway cover tunes, and Aftermath has the inexplicable Going Home, which should have been about 5 minutes shorter. But the original material on those records is mostly pretty great, and some of the covers (like It's All Over Now and Time Is On My Side) are actually pretty good too.

If nothing else, you should at least have Hot Rocks, since that gives you a good overview of the early stuff.

And yet Satanic Majesties is their best album (imo).

I think Sticky Fingers is really good too. I haven't heard most of their albums though.

My opinion too. Not that I've heard all of their albums, or have any plans to.

Same here although I would at least like to own all the ones that Brian Jones and Mick Taylor played on at some point.

Too many Stones records I've never heard. My faves of the ones I have are Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street.

I say Let It Bleed, although the whole run from Banquet to Exile is flat-out perfect.

Yeah, though I'd say Exile is a notch or two below the others.

They probably peaked with Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed, but Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are not far behind.

I just have "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" and only because of "Time Waits For No One". Such a beautiful song with wonderful guitar- and Moog-playing by Mick Taylor.

The first time I heard that track I recognized the guitar-theme from his own song "A Minor" from his wonderful debut:

    Here's a nice review of Mick's album:

For me it would be a toss up between "Exile On Main St." , "Beggars Banquet", and "Let It Bleed" all solid albums from start to finish. For later albums "Some Girls" and "Tattoo You" both have their moments, although have some clunkers as well. I like the "Steel Wheels" album quite a bit. Not really a bad song on it IMO. I even find some things to like on "Dirty Work" which most Stone fans seem to consider one of the band's worst albums.

That four album run from Beggars to Exile is pretty jaw-dropping. Sticky Finger has a couple things that would appeal to a progger, "Can't You Hear Me Rocking" with its long jazzy coda and "Moonlight Mile", a six minute ballad with a gorgeous string arrangement from Paul Buckmaster. It's stuff like this that made them legendary. That and the raw force they could summon on stage during the Mick Taylor years.

Maybe but apparently Exile is a notch or two above the next few(up to Some Girls maybe).

Stones never made a real good album, IMHO...

I wouldn't call them a singles band, but bI only own compilations (Hot Rocks, Made In The Shade and Sucking in the 70's)

If push comes to shove, and I must really pick one studio album, it'll be Let It Bleed... Some Girls would be a second choice
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I used to make that argument as well, but then I heard Exile, and damn that one really lives up to the hype...

Can you believe they actually gave that name to a compilation? Too funny!

Probably my #2 Stones album, after Exile! It feels like a throwaway, which it is... But throwaways don't get any better than that.

It would go with either BEGGAR'S BANQUET or LET IT BLEED.

I like Some Girls a lot
Compact Disk brought high fidelity to the masses and audiophiles will never forgive it for that
