HRH Prog 3
Ok, so I've returned from beautiful North Wales back to Glasgow and I thought I'd give a short summary;
Didn't make.Thursday night.
Friday; Full of really fine Prog Rock bands; Sanguine Hum are a new band to me that I'll follow up. I'm already a fan so might be biased, but standout band for me was Touchstone. Tremendous set and well received. On far to far down the bill being 3rd band on. They announced there will be a further few "farewell" shows with Kim Saviour, which I presume will be in Mid/south England, so I'll probably miss them. I spoke to Rob the keyboard player before the show and he suggested a new line-up might re-appear in November. I'm afraid "The Bridge" from The Enid is not my cup of tea and comes across a quasi-opera to me. Finishing with BJH's Mocking Bird finished their set off well.I'm not a huge Mostly Autumn fan but their drummer deserves special mention for playing one handed after breaking his hand setting up the drums.
Saturday; Too many hard rock bands for my taste. It wasn't 'till 5th band in Jump that I could even sit and listen. Through the first 4 bands the crowd actually got thinner. Magenta were the only Prog band on the whole day, but they absolutely delivered with a storming set that went down really well. Steelye Span brough back memories of All Around My Hat on Crackerjack (a UK kids TV show from the 70's) and was a really enjoyable set, but not quite my thing. Lastly Rick Wakeman solo piano; I was a little worried this might not be the best setting for this kind of show but I needn't have worried. Leaving aside the stories that I've heard loads of times (but that obviously many in the audience hadn't as they were well received) the music was stunning. How one man can sit at a piano and come up with that is amazing. Highlights for me were "Journey Short Score" and "And You And I/ Wonderous Stories".
All in all a good prog festival that (as long as there's at least one less heavy metal band) I'll be looking to go back to next year. HRH/ TeamRock/ Jerry Ewing etc deserve a lot of credit for putting this festival together. I wouldn't have given you tuppence a few years ago for the suggestion I'd be able to attend a "Prog Rock" festival.
A little footnote; Having a Sci-Fi convention on at the same time is a great idea and provided a little diversion.

Quite a nice line-up with Lifesigns and Knifeworld thrown in too.

I missed Knifeworld on the Thursday night and although I enjoyed the Lifesigns album they weren't quite to my taste listening to them live, but nice music and it was well received.
