Today is Pi Day 3/14/15 and festivities will reach their peak at 9:26:53.5897932384626433832795...
This will be the only Pi Day we will enjoy since the next one won't be until 3/14/159
so we need to make the most of it.
We should make sure and eat a piece of pi
There is actually an international Tau Day. Can't recall what day of the year it is, but I don't think the date is related to the value of tau.
Tau, for those who don't know, is pi times 2. In many senses it's a more fundamental quantity than pi and many scientists and mathematicians advocate the practice of adopting a single letter (the Greek letter tau) for that quantity and not bother with a separate symbol for the quantity we now call pi. As someone who has done heaps of scientific computer programming, I agree with this. Most programming languages and many other software packages have the value of pi "built in". Whenever I use it, I almost always have to multiply it by 2.
