Bands mentioned by other bands (in song)

The Fall: Guest Informant (excerpt) - 1988

    The miserable Scottish hotel,
Resembled a Genesis or Marillion, 1973 LP cover
All the hotel staff had been dismissed...

    I asked Bobby Dylan
    I asked The Beatles
    I asked Timothy Leary
But he couldn't help me, either

The Fall: I Am Damo Suzuki (1985)

The fuck-up like red acid rain
Give it to me Daki every day
    Who is Mr. Karlheinz Stockhausen?
    Introduce me
    I'm Damo Suzuki

The Monkees - "Randy Scouse Git".
"The four kings of EMI" refers to the Beatles.

The Beatles themselves namecheck B. B. King and Doris Day in "Dig It".

"Phil and Don" in Wings' "Let 'em In" almost certainly refers to the Everly Brothers.

Donovan mentions Jefferson Airplane in "The Fat Angel", the title of which refers to Mama Cass Elliot. He also mentions Bob Dylan and "Joanie" or "Joni" in "The Trip"; not sure if that refers to Joan Baez or Joni Mitchell.

Lynyrd Skynyrd famously mention Neil Young.

"1985" by Bowling For Soup names a number of acts of that era, and contains the line "When did Motley Crue become classic rock?".

Cheap Trick in "Surrender" sing "got my Kiss records out."

I'm sure there's a shitload of other examples.

We all came out to Montreaux
    On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
    We didn't have much time
    Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around.

Just about every Wesley Willis song is about another band, for example:

You are a good punk rocker
    You are a maniac
You can really sing your ass off to the max
    You are a good person

Some more Tangent, from the Canterbury Sequence:

I seem to spend my whole life shouting,
    Perhaps I should be cool,
Put on some Caravan or Hatfields,
Like I used to do at school

"I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T.Rex" - the Who, "You Better You Bet"

The whole song "Elvis is Everywhere" - Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper

"If you don't have Mojo Nixon, your record store needs fixin'"
"Someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox"
-- both from Dead Milkmen, "Punk Rock Girl"

"Jack the ripper Owens Wilson Phillips and my supper's ready" (etc.) - Dream Theater, "Octavarium"
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

If anything, Donovan's version has an atmosphere of smog about it. I still think it's a great rendition; I love the smokey jazz vibe, the guitar chords and that eminent flute solo.
