    Hero songs in the charts.

Not at all common anymore, Big Bad John (which was No.1 the day I was Born), John Henry, Joe Hill, Sacco & Vanzetti. The most recent one I can think of is Camouflage by Stan Ridgeway.

John Paul Young - Yesterday's Hero
    1927 - Compulsory Hero

and I'm surprised no one yet mentioned David Bowie!

Okaaay, I had hoped for songs named after heores, as in the examples I provided not just songs with the word "hero" in the title

Dschinghis Khan - Dschinghis Khan (Genghis Khan)

Elton John has done several songs about heroes and heroines, though I can only think of one (Candle in the Wind, original and remake) that was a successful charting single. Others include Cage the Songbird, The Ballad of Danny Bailey, and, most recently, Oscar Wilde Gets Out.

Wasn't that one kind of the inspiration for Camouflage by Stan Ridgeway?
