Anthony Phillips revamps 'The Geese & the Ghost'!

Genesis co-founder's 1977’s solo debut to appear in Definitive Edition next month
Genesis founding guitarist Anthony Phillips will release the Definitive Edition of his 1997 solo debut, The Geese And The Ghost, on March 9 via Esoteric Recordings.

The three-disc set presents a remastered version of the original record, a second disc of demos and early versions, plus a DVD featuring a 5.1 Surround Sound mix. Unreleased tracks include the unreleased single version of Silver Song from 1973 and the previously unreleased Only Your Love – both with Phillips' former bandmate Phil Collins on vocals.

The project comes on the heels of the five-disc anthology Harvest Of The Heart, which offered a thorough 90-track career overview of Phillips' work and included 10 previously unreleased tunes.

He began writing and recording The Geese And The Ghost with Genesis bandmate Mike Rutherford in 1969. After leaving the band in 1970 due to stage fright, he worked on the recordings on and off over the next seven years before it was released.

Phillips tells Goldmine: “Punk was coming in and this type of album was being threatened. It sat on a shelf of over a year before my saviour, Marty Scott of Jem Records, picked it up. What a relief.”

The Definitive Edition of The Geese And The Ghost can be pre-ordered now from Cherry Red Records.

Ditto. I bought for the 5.1.
I got the two-disc version that was released a few years ago so my question is whether the stereo re-master on that is the same version that this version will have.

Again, I am buying this for the 5.1 so it is not a critical thing.

We have a few used shops here that mostly have vinyl and some used CDs but I don't think there is a single shop that only sells new CDs in this town (of 600,000 people). There are one or two Barnes & Nobles that have CDs but forget finding anything beyond the mainstream.

Some of my fondest memories occurred in music stores when I was young. The joy of discovering something new was wonderful. In particular, discovering most of Ant's LPs were some of the most frequent examples of that sense of surprise and delight. From the first LP (Geese & the Ghost) in 1977 to about 2002 (when I started to get things on-line), I almost never knew a new Ant recording existed until I saw it in the bins. The excitement at finding a new Ant record was so enjoyable.

That is cool! What town or city?
(I bought my copy of the LP in Yonkers, NY at Sam Goody in the spring of 1977)

How would you rate the 5.1 of this and is there a plan for Wise After The Event and hopefully Sides?

The 5.1 mix is done with much care and sounds warm and detailed. In my ears it hasn't changed the atmosphere of the album, like some surround mixed do.

I listened to the two stereo CDs this weekend. Stunning sound quality! I did not A/B it against the version from a few years ago. I did like the various extras on Disc 2.

I hope to listen to the 5.1 this weekend.

OK, just got this and listened to the 5.1 disc. My first impression is the bass seemed very subtle. There are some parts of this album where I thought the bass would really gain some punch and the overall sound would be fuller. I was disappointed in that regard. There are numerous spots where a few of the instruments stand out better (mainly woodwinds). Flutes sound a bit harsh in some spots. There are also some brief parts that sound misplaced or missing some parts. The abrupt blast of Misty Battlements sounded like it came in either too early or too late. The timing just didn't seem to be the way I remember it.
Overall, I still enjoyed it, but it was not the revelation that many other 5.1 mixes bring to the table. I suspect I will favor the stereo remix in this case.

Argh! I just bought this from my local HMV and there is only 1CD. I appear to have two copies of the DVD.
