After much speculation about what would be next it is annonced that Sparkle in the Rain is going to be released as a 5 disc box set!
Love this band so it's a no brainer for me!

I was a Simple Minds fan even before I got into prog! Of course it's great album but I'm surprised he's not remixing New Gold Dream which is usually considered the ultimate Simple Minds album.
Not just a Genesis fanboy.

Have a boot of that Glasgow gig so looking forward to hearing it 'cleaned up'. If my memory serves me right Bono guests on New Gold Dream?
Somehow I just don't need this in 5.1. I'll probably just stick with my mini LP version, but I'm glad to see the album get some attention.
Having bought their X5 box last year.... not so tempted.
I guess I am not that much of a completist.
I am sure there are some gems in there.

This looks like an autobuy for me. Oddly enough, I can't find any news of this box set on Amazon or Simple minds' official website. I am a completest with them. Funny, it surprises me that Steven Wilson is that big a fan of bands like Simple Minds and Tears For Fears that he would get involved in remixing their albums.

It shouldn't surprise you at all. Wilson has long spoken about his love of albums beyond the progressive, psychedelic and metal worlds. It might surprise you to hear that he's a fan of at least some ABBA records. I know that he's a fan of ECM, which is not that big a stretch, but when I spoke to him around the time of our interview in 2012, it surprised me thathe was aware of people like Mariyn Crispell...someone who I'd not have expected to be on his radar.
Once I heard that, to be honest, nothing has ever surprised me since, as it became clear he's a very broad-minded music fan...much more than even his own music might suggest (and certainly his own projects suggest a pretty open mind), which is also a very encouraging thing, I think.
Well said. Steven Wilson has always embraced all types of music with his various projects. It would be great if he dug into remixing more albums by 80s type new wave bands. I could see him remixing albums by The Cure.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
(squints)
I don't see any versions of "Theme for Great Cities".
I do love New Gold Dream as much (if not better). It made a great C90 for the car.

Plasmatopia: Maybe a song in D minor that has never been played?
bob_32_116: That would be a terrific triple bill: Cyan, Magenta and Yello.

Please, no. There may be some justification for remixing albums from the 70s or earlier, with the benefit of better technology, though even there many would say the originals are best left alone. Once you get to the 80s, production is clean, sparse, almost antiseptic. In many cases though there was nothing behind that production, no real tune. (I did say elsewhere thqat the 80s are not my favourite period, didn't I?) Even with decent stuff like the Cure, the production was pretty uncomplicated, and I find it hard to see how any kind of remake would be worthwhile.
I have to agree. The production values of a lot of the 80's ( new wave/electro-pop ) stuff is pretty untouchable.

There is still a lot of 70's Prog Rock Masterpieces that could be remixed - as Tales from Topograhic Oceans, maybe some of the Wakeman's first six records, etc - insted of using his time in remixing stuff of the 80's, IMHO. But of course, is someone is willing to pay for his work I think he will continue to do it.

I don't get it. The value of SW's time is measured by whether he is working in a genre or era appreciated by some participants in this forum???
I happen to think that his work with XTC is among his best remix/5.1 projects and "Songs From The Big Chair" is revelatory in many respects. Being a child of the 80's and a fan of many bands of the era (including Simple Minds), I welcome his work outside of what many consider the traditional progressive genre.
Steven Wilson embraces other musical interests. Oh the humanity!
Seriously, this guy enjoys everything from Donna Summer to Karlheinz Stockhausen. He's a musical sponge.

Unless you've got the original multi-tracks and have an ear like Wilson's, I'm not sure, with all due respect, if you can make that judgement. He's done a great job with TFF, XTC....let's give him a chance before indicting him, shall we? I never thought anyone could make me like Drums and Wires (I prefer post- new wave XTC personally) but he did, so I'm prepared to take some leaps of faith to try and hear what he hears in the music he chooses.
I may not like it all...but I sure trust his insincts enough to go along for the ride.
