YES - Many Faces Of Yes (3 CD)

Just come across this on Amazon

YES - Many Faces Of Yes (3 CD) – GBP 11.99 (released 08/12/2014)

The Many Faces of Yes presents an unknown side of the band, with recordings by the group as a whole and also by solo members, including rarities and other gems. On CD 1, "The BBC Sessions", the group is presented in their original lineup (Jon Anderson on vocals, Peter Banks on guitar, Bill Bruford on drums, Chris Squire on bass and Tony Kaye on keyboards) with their performanc es in the London's BBC Radio. CD 2 is titled "Before and After Yes' Projects" and contains songs by several members of the group recorded before and after they were part of the band. CD 3 is titled "Playin' Their Favourite Songs" and its name says it all. Members and former members of Yes playing songs from Pink Floyd, Genesis and even the AOR classic "More Than A Feeling" by Boston.

This looks about as interesting as Genesis' "R-Kive".

(Disc 3 looks like a compilation from Billy Sherwood's various cover projects featuring various Yes members.

And I wouldn't expect Disc 2 to feature much if anything at all from the band's prime period (i.e. 1975-76 solo albums). More likely stuff like Circa:, Conspiracy etc.)

They should release Disc 1 only and call it a day.

Where are those Wakeman Yes remakes from? They're not from the Greatest Hits album.

Dunno, am not aware of any solo versions of TRSoG, America or Long Distance Runaround?

I would imagine they're taken from this CD of Adam Wakeman and the ERE.

Rick guests on some spots, although it's hard to know which. These tunes are often attributed to Rick. I thoroughly recommend "The Revealing Songs of Yes". The "Many faces of Yes" seems to be just the one really; the one that tries to wring every bit of cash it can from it's fans through rehashing old (already released several times under different titles) stuff. I read an interview with Steve Howe were he said that if a Yes CD didn't have the classic logo then is was a record company deal as they couldn't release anything with the classic logo without the bands permission (I think Steve and Roger Dean own the rights - although i might be wrong). This new CD has the classic Yes logo so I'd therefore assume it's endorsed by the band.

Christmas is coming up, and I know many of you want to give me a present, knowing that I'm a huge Yes fan. I appreciate the gesture, but please don't collectively send me 5 copies of Heaven and Earth and 3 copies of whatever the hell this is.

    Much obliged

If the credits on your linked MP3s are to be believed, Rick plays on "Roundabout" and "Wonderous Stories," but not the three collected here...although Nikki Squire is on "Long Distance Runaround."

Would you rather Rick do it? Not sure that would be much of an improvement.

That's less than half the faces of Yes by my count.

Jeeze, you're absolutely correct. They shouldn't release this at all and call it a day.

This is a bunch of material being re-(re-re-re-)released in a new format. The band do not have any control over these re-releases, this is material that is controlled by a number of small labels, and generally the band don't even know when these compilations are released, although they should get royalties. Whether the end result is worth getting is up to the consumer. Disc 1 is the best material, but is available as a 2CD set of Banks-era BBC sessions.

Interesting. Never thought of it that way.

    But still "many."
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally

Releases with the classic logo that weren't endorsed by the band have appeared before... and have then been withdrawn and re-appeared without the logo! If the YesWorld website/Facebook account/Twitter account isn't talking about it, then you can presume that it has not been endorsed by the band. I'm sure this hasn't been.

You're for waiting for the eventual "Merry Yes-mas" album, right?

Proposed by management around 2006, IIRC. Idea rejected by band, but Chris Squire did Chris Squire's Swiss Choir.

Mine is called Something's Coming. Either way it sounds awful.

Much of it comes from Banks' own off-air recordings as the original BBC master tapes could not be found. At least, they could not be found at the time.

The rights over that material are dubious, but it gets released over and over. And while sound quality is not great, there are some great performances.
