I think Bohuslav Martinů is kind of underappreciated.

A lot of Debussys orchestral pieces aren't played that much either. They are fantastic in my ears!

I think Bohuslav Martinů is kind of underappreciated.

I have his symphonies, and double concerto which I enjoy.

And I have the Tilson Thomas recording of Debussy's Le Martyre... which is beautiful. Chalkpie turned me on to that one.

So this week I pulled out my copy of Kazuhito Yamashita's solo guitar versions of Dvorak's New World Symphony and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. If you haven't heard this, it is seriously audacious. By the end of the Stravinsky it sounds like he's going to pull the strings right off his guitar. It's not the cleanest thing you've ever heard but boy does it cook!

There are some incredible women composers from the 20th century and 21st century.


Joan Tower's "Concerto for Orchestra" is one of the best pieces of the 90's.





Another incredible composers is Thea Musgrave.





A recent discovery for me is, Augusta Read Thomas. Everything I've heard from her is great.

Aine O'Dwyer is an Irish harp player.She recorded improvisations on a church organ after hours, when cleaners and other visitors were puttering around the aisles

Anton Webern-String Quartet (1905)

I recently bought a cd of Webern's string quartets.Over the years i considered getting a cd of Webern's music but never, until now, pulled the trigger.I've occasionally heard his music over a radio station here in NYC and found it extremely tough sledding.This piece is quite approachable.I'm sure the later works on the cd will be more challenging, but this one is quite good.

Yes his early pieces were surprisingly approachable. My wife's piano teacher was a family friend back in Austria and had very fond memories of him as a gentle, quiet, brilliant man. His death was truly tragic considering he survived the war.
