Interesting to see the widely different views and rankings of Happiness. This is one I'm especially paying attention to. I had the feeling I was missing something. So i'm trying to play it start to finish with headphones on and no distractions. It is getting better ....
After that I need to try the same with Sounds that can't be made because so far i only like gaza but not much else. It deserves more attention as well, I'm thinking
Seasons End 3.5/5
Holidays in Eden 2.5
Brave 4.5
Afraid of Sunlight 4
This Strange Engine 3
Radiation 3
marillion.com 3.5
Anoraknophobia 4
Marbles (2 CD) 4
Somewhere Else 4
Happiness Is the Road Vol. 1 & 2 2.5
Less Is More 2
Sounds That Can't Be Made 1.5
All that said, the best things they've released w/- Hogarth IMO are two Front Row Club discs:
FRC-020, Copenhagen 27-28/05/94, which includes a reference performance of Brave, and
FRC-038, Warsaw 22/05/07, ditto for 'Ocean Cloud'
Both those get 5/5 from me.
Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

then I sort of lost interest and though I've heard most of their subsequent albums, none have really excited me. I know a lot of people really like Brave but I could never get into that.

Can't stand Marbles. When I heard it, I thought it was the worst thing Marillion put out. Granted, I got the single-CD version, but I'm not interested in seeking the double-CD version after hearing that. I just thought if this was the kind of music they wanted to make, more power to 'em but I'm gone. Like their song says.

STCBM basically finishes for me after “invisible ink”. i find both “lucky man” (unbearable old-fogeys-pub-plod-rock) and “the sky above the rain” (enough already, h!) all but unbearable and they spoil an otherwise fine album. the title track is actually my favourite from it; it is the only song on the album where they actually chart some new territory (by way of an increased electronica bias which suits them well).
well, the double has “ocean cloud” and its popularity equally puzzles me since i find it terribly incoherent and drawn out for its own sake. this, ultimately, makes it a very. boring. song. BUT it has this chillingly-beautiful and perennially overlooked gem of a song which happens to be one of my all-time favourites by them. h at his most masterful.
these album are hard to judge by individual song quality quotient. “marbles” (the double) has a few hit-and-miss numbers but its flow and coherence is amazing; not least because of the four “marbles” pieces and the story that they tell. hence, #2 in my ranking as an individual album, after “afraid of sunlight” which is just sublime and faultless. i wrote this many times here and i'll gladly repeat: everything after AoS is somehow a derivative of it. it's the first album where h-MARiLLiON finally sounded like themselves.

The rest, I'm either unfamiliar with, or I haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Just to illustrate how different Marillion fans' opinions can be, the song Out of This World is one song that I never really liked. I basically live for Rothery solos, but the one on that song just doesn't grab me. But I know many people love the song.
Another I'm in a minority on is Dry Land. I just don't care for that song.
I think it's a fantastic song, and one of their best, with or without the story.
