Check out the band Dirty Loops and their song 'Hit Me' on the YouTube.
Actually, drummers will enjoy them as well. Think Level 42 after a can of Red Bull.

I lasted until :05.
Attention, airsickness bag owners.
Wow - Horrible !
it almost sound like a parody.
Wow, all this negativity and I had to check it out. It's not my cup of tea but it's not that bad. There's a few interesting melodies going on in there but it's buried under the artificial GarageBand-On-Steroids production.
"Arf." -- Frank Zappa, "Beauty Knows No Pain" (live version)
so, the virtuosity isn't working for you guys, I take it?
I think it's great. 22 year old kid can really sing his ass off too. Very Stevie Wonder.
Don't hate the player....hate the game.
That guy playing the git-bass or whatever it is needs to stop smiling.
Can't take them.
I had high expectations for this band, but samples didn't do anything for me. There was an article on the bassist in Bass Player Magazine, and
I was psyched to check it out. Not for me.
I think they are fucking great, myself. They are accomplished players at a young age. They've absorbed quite a few fusion influences and they are combining that with a pop sound, as the singer has the pipes for it. I'm interested in where they'll go with it.
I am seeing them live next week In Los Angeles. The album is kinda mixed. Some really good moments and some not so great moments.
David Foster got behind them and might have watered them down a bit.
Good to see young kids stretching it out though!
I've admired them from their first video I saw on YouTube. I think they are outstanding! Then I saw them the other night at The Opera House in a Toronto. Man, what a show! These guys are so young, yet so exceptionally talented. The place was totally rocking, what an enthusiastic crowd! I cannot wait to see them again!
Coming September 1st - "Dean Watson Revisited"!
Shit those guys can freakin' play! I totally respect that. Don't really dig the genre, but respect the players. Jeebus! Buncha negative Nancies here.
But you wouldn't want us to lie would you?
I aknowledge they are terrific players, tight as hell, but their music and style really underlines, that technique alone doesnt do it (for me). Its like watching sports, when you really dont care who will win.
It could be interesting where these musicians are in 10 years. My guess would be that they will working in studios, producing or be in other entertainment branches, I cant see them inventing anything musically.
I could be wrong
Singer is wonder like. All great players. Singer is standout.
Been listening to the album since it came out; I think they're great too! Yeah, it's pop, but it's so full of surprises within the arrangements and there's so much great musicianship that it stands out from 95% of the pop that's coming out these days. I call it "muso-friendly pop" and it's a genre that's practically non existent anywhere else these days. The occasional technical flashiness never gets in the way and I'd say it's far from meaningless. And yes, that bass player is a badass! I love the usage of "adult chords and progressions" too; another thing that's pretty rare in pop music.
I'd actually rather listen to this than a lot of the modern prog I sample here at PE. To each his (or her) own!
Some good musicianship, but I couldn't handle the vocals. Not my cup of tea.
Totally dig this, it's like some bizarre hybrid between J-pop and Steely Dan style jazz pop.
It sort of sounds like funk meets emo. Not my thing but I can listen to it for a little bit. The bass player is talented. Not sure I hear Steely Dan maybe more like Toto.
No, actually, you turned me on to this place, indirectly (you or FA mentioned it somewhere).
J-pop is stuff like Plastic Tree and Glay and Shiina Ringo and Yoko Kanno and ... well, stuff like this:
...except this (Dirty Loops) is a little jazzier than those saccharin sweet pop confections.
(Plastic Tree and Glay and Yoko Kanno are probably more J-rock, but still with the super-produced sound and the nose towards accessibility.
Shiina Ringo's album, Karuki Samen Kuri no Hana (加爾基 精液 栗ノ花(カルキ・ザーメン・くりのはな)is just awesome, it's the Dark Side of the Moon of J-Pop.
Oh, unholy carp, there's a video for Stem?
EDIT: Actually, that's a recent remake, the original was much poppier. This is more in line with the style of the original record:

Level 42 on Red Bull.... that's really a good description. Except, no Mark King. I would LOVE this band if they were instrumental. They are tight as a gnat's asshole, have tasty licks and I don't think slick is a bad word. But the vocals... they kill it for me. Just way too cheesy boy band upper class white kid r&b for me to deal with. Beyond that, love 'em.
