Robert Fripp, interview: 'I’m a very difficult person to work with'

Guitarist Robert Fripp influenced David Bowie and Peter Gabriel but it's only the latest revival of his band King Crimson that has brought out his happy side

In other news, grass is green.

Just kidding good article. Fripp is candid, but I'm not certain he's always been totally honest with himself over the years. Seems like he's coming closer of late, which is easier to do with hindsight and not being caught up in the daily detils.

“It’s the first Crimson where I don’t sense any animosity or resentment from at least one member in the band,” says Fripp.

Maybe that's what is missing ?

“It’s the first Crimson where I don’t sense any animosity or resentment from at least one member in the band,” says Fripp. “Excepting [sic], no doubt, that the responsibility for that falls at my feet.”

Nice to see The Telegraph maintaining excellent editorial standards, and knowing how to bungle the word "Accepting" into "Excepting"... :-)

    However, really good interview!

Good article. Good to know that RF was able to put his legal issues behind him & move forward again.

Nice! I'm just praying there will be more. Wow, I'm still glowing from the October 1st L.A. show.

There's also been a New Yorker article about Fripp today: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cul...kend-prog-rock . Can like the New Yorker. Anyone else agree their article's insubstantial and shallow though??

In other news, Geddy Lee has a high voice and Ian Anderson plays the flute.

    Great article!

Actually, I enjoyed it. Music need not be complex...

I'd say it would be a great PE post. I enjoyed reading it. New Yorker worthy ? Not sure.

Yes, I'd agree with that. Thought it better when I re-read it, but there can be New Yorker articles that explore things in more depth.

There are lots of musicians that are hard to work with. If one has a singular vision and knows what they want, it's very hard for someone else to appreciate that. It's also hard for the artist to accept that fact. It's just his personality and he's a unique guy, composer and player. I'm not sure I'd want to be in his band though! Seems to be an unsatisfying experience for many, not excluding Fripp himself.

A lot of that tension and unhappiness undoubtedly comes from the contradiction of Fripp wanting total control and creatively co-equal bandmates at the same time.

How does The New Yorker let "vocal chords" slip past the copy desk? I expect shoddy editing from a lot of publications these days, but The New Yorker is not one of them.

He has an unpleasant nature, and dislikes people.

This is no obstacle to work.
