Went to (the) Melvins show last night. Wound up chatting briefly with a guy who noticed my Magma t-shirt. He clued me into Monolord. Definitely a band I should check out, right?

An uneven band, that gets a bit monotonous and repetitive in textures, usually making me lose interest halfway through their albums. I'm always taking them in small bits and rarely revisit. Their first three albums sound more "muddy" and are the ones to prioritise while visiting their discography. Their debut and Vænir are in my opinion their best. Their last, Your Time To Shine, is their weakest offer, to my ears.

Does anyone remember Tarantula Hawk from San Diego? They released a handful of fairly interesting CDs between 2000 and 2004 merging droney and aggressive space-rock cacophony with faint traces of Zeuhl in overarching structure and in time went consequently into connections with SubArachnoid Space, Yeti, Great Tyrant and a couple of other darkly minded sets of combos. For some reason, Monolord always reminded me a bit of THawk, sometimes even of the early, more lo-fi-noisy and chaotic Guapo stuff.

One of the most interesting bands of what was called avant metal back at the times (early 00s). They even bordered with atmospheric industrial and space rock realms.

^ I'm not a fan of Doom, or any Metal really, but I like that. Ordered.

Interesting. What was it that struck you about it?

Hmm...I guess operatic without being too much so, absence of bass drum HM cliche, well constructed and well performed songs? If they had used standard HM tropes I would have been out. Thankfully, they didn't.

There are probably some more bands I could turn you on to, if you're interested.

Yeah, they have that epic vibe like old Candlemass, but IMO they take the "doom" vibe up a notch or two.

German band on a classic early 90s take on doom with a slightly modernized vibe.

Ahab, Cathedral, and Candlemass are probably the doomiest stuff I listen to. All great.

Nooooo!!!! I'm sorry but we can never speak to each other ever again...sorry Moe. Just kidding, we can speak on every half moon on the 3rd Saturday of the annual St Bollocks Day festival.

Seriously, there's never been any metal in your life?

Moreso in younger days. Rainbow, Dio, Sabs. I like a lot of early 70s Heavy Rock, but I would draw a distinction between that stuff and Metal, especially the 80s variety.

One of the few doom bands with a gothic influence that I enjoy. Their new one is also very good. And heavier, while retaining this dark, ecstatic and otherworldly feel that made their debut stand out.

Not an expert in this matter, but I guess it's oké to mention this second album by the Dutch psychedelic doom-band Gula, Birds Of The Apocalypse.
Personally I also hear 80s Gothic, early Cure and My Dying Bride, but like I wrote: I'm not an expert.
