    Music Q&A: Dylan Howe
    Oct 03, 2014 16:18

    By Jade Wright

He's worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Steve Howe and Wilko Johnson, and tonight he comes to the Capstone Theatre

Dylan Howe has worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Steve Howe and Wilko Johnson. He played on the recent album number one album, Going Back Home, with Wilko and Roger Daltrey.

He has also played with the likes of Nick Cave, Damon Albarn, Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Beth Gibbons, Gabrielle, Hugh Cornwell and Andy Sheppard.

He’s just released Subterranean, his first studio album in ten years. It’s made up of his arrangements of David Bowie’s music from his Berlin Trilogy and has been seven years in the making.

It features some of the best musicians in the UK including Dylan Howe – drums / synths, Ross Stanley – piano / synths, Mark Hodgson – double bass, Brandon Allen – tenor saxophone, Julian Siegal – tenor saxophone, Nick Pini – bass, Adrian Utley – guitar and special guest Yes guitarist Steve Howe playing Koto.

"I was making a record this time, not just recording an album," he explains. "In the past I would be in the studio for a day or two at the most, or just bring a mobile studio to a gig; this time however, the process and result has been a little like the music, kind of cinematic, a feeling of scale and intensity.

"Think John Coltrane Quartet produced by Neu! mixed by Brian Eno in an air-raid shelter."

Tonight he’s playing a gig at the Capstone Theatre.

Tell us about your Merseyside gig:

It’s the first time I’ve played at the Capstone and I’m looking forward to it.

Expect a cinematic (we’re showing a specially made film with the concert), jazz, electronica, Bowie-edged, dreamlike 110 minutes - unlike anything you might have seen / heard before whilst sober. Also my in-laws live in Liverpool so I’m hoping they’ll not be too rowdy in the audience - might have to prime security.

Which song is stuck in your head today?

    Lady Stardust By David Bowie

    What’s on your iPod/stereo today?

    Morning Phase - Beck

What was the first album you bought?

    Landscape - Einstein A Go Go (!)

Which musician do you most admire, and why?

Miles Davis, Roy Haynes, Joni Mitchell, Igor Stravinsky and Tony Williams - in no particular order - for daily inspiration

What are your three favourite albums of all time?

Close To The Edge - Yes

Live In Antibes - Miles Davis Quintet

Now He Sings Now He Sobs - Chick Corea

Tell us about a great band we might not have heard of:

Eight Rounds Rapid - a new Southend group

Have you ever been told you look like anyone famous?

On a good day a young Terence Stamp or Rupert Friend, on a bad day Billy Bunter (as opposed to Billy Butler).

If we ended up in a karaoke club, what would you sing?

Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson

What song would you like played at your funeral?

An Ending, Ascent - Brian Eno

What was your most embarrassing moment?

Thinking I could sing Tears Of A Clown in a karaoke club

What is your most treasured possession?

    My zircon encrusted tweezers

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard said or written about you?

Someone at one of my jazz gigs came up to me in between the sets, very agitated, almost screaming: ‘I don’t know what you’re doing, and I don’t think you do either,’ whilst pulling on his coat to leave.

    Facebook or Twitter?

    Carrier pigeon

    Liverpool, Everton or Tranmere FC?

    Boris Becker

Close your eyes. If I was your fairy godmother, what would your three wishes be?

That Ringo had never been allowed near a mic in the studio, that Paul had stopped doing solo albums after Band On The Run and John had been a bit nicer.

Liked the choice of funeral music, mentioned in this. Good blog about it: http://dezji.wordpress.com/2007/10/2...g-ascent-1983/

Interesting replies by Dylan. He's got good taste.

Interesting comment about Lennon at the end. I don't share his antipathy to Ringo's vocals though. Beatles comment perhaps influenced by Liverpool location of newspaper.

I'm glad Dylan appreciates Close To the Edge, while he's not really a prog musician himself. He is a good jazz drummer - I've seen him with The Blockheads and the excellent Steve Howe Trio (which was definitely a jazz trio).
