Bands that kept getting better after their 4th album

there are very few I know of

Pink Floyd is the first that springs to mind
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Well, Close To The Edge is better than Fragile......I think Selling England is better than Foxtrot.... and after Aqualung, all the greatest Tull albums occurred....

Phideaux - not to disparage his early work but the last three stand well above the earlier releases: Doomsday Afternoon, Number 7, Snowtorch and to a lesser extent The Great Leap.

I also agree with Yes: Close to the Edge, Tales, Relayer, Going for the One - I prefer all of these to the first four releases.

Zappa: although Absolutely Free is great, MOI would do better with Uncle Meat and Burnt Weeny Sandwich and he'd do much better things afterward like Roxy, One Size, Zappa in NY, and on and on.

Does this mean you think Division Bell is their best since their fourth?

Or do you mean bands for which their best album wasn't among their first four?

    Agree with Phideaux.
Also, IQ took a giant step forward with Subterranea, and are now better than "Ever".

King Crimson only got really good starting with the fifth.

    (LTiA, that is, not Earthbound.)

no, the thread isn't 'bands that never had a dropoff in quality'

though Pekka Pohjola certainly wins in *that* category

Then what is it? If after the 4th album they kept getting better, that implies they never had a drop off in quality.

Do you mean bands whose 5th album is better than the preceding four?

Two words: Tangerine Dream. Starting with Phaedra, the previous four albums felt like a warm-up.
