I play a straight ahead jazz gig once a month at an upper scale seafood restaurant in Chicago's Loop. It's a 5 night a week gig for the pianist and bass player, but they have a roster of guests that play with them. The guests call the tunes since, like most (older) jazz players, these guys know a million jazz tunes and standards. I don't, not compared to those guys! I try to bring different tunes every month; don't want to always be playing the same ones. So I thought about Irving Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean," a tune I've heard enough times but never played. I Googled the song title to listen to some different versions and learn it. There were renditions by not so unusual suspects, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, etc. But I never thought one of them would be this guy! Definitely qualifies as a wtf cover for me!

I love those surf tunes. I go out of my way (or rather it IS my way) to seek out dark surf music. now I gotta go track down those bands.

By a remarkable coincidence there's an interesting set of WTF covers at BigO right now - a Bulgarian classical pianist taking on the Pink Floyd songbook with mixed but interesting results.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

Stumbled on this the other day. I'm still not sure what to make of it.

Twisted by Joni Mitchell was cool.
Ozzy says Pat Boone is the greatest.
If a cover is different enough (Little Wing by Derek and the Dominoes, Purple Haze by Winger with Dweezil Zappa) I'm all ears.

Ozzy and his family lived next door to Pat. I think this was during the first season of Ozzy's reality show. I gather they got along great. Then later, either Ozzy and his family moved, or Pat did, and the new neighbors, the Osbournes weren't quite as happy with. I think there's one episode where wassername, the youngest daughter (Ozzy actually has three daughters but only wassername agreed to be in the TV show) says, "I miss living next door to Mr Boone".
Little Wing by Derek and the Dominoes,
There was a really cool live version that was used on a Soundpage by Guitar Player back in the late 80's, around the time the original Crossroads boxset came out. As I recall, it kicks off with Clapton playing a version of Jimi's intro, but with the wah wah pedal on it, then when he gets to the end of the intro, the entire band kicks in with that fanfare thing that was the intro on their studio version. Sounded pretty cool, I thought. Bobby Whitlock's Hammond breaks down, so Clapton has to take a double length solo, too.

Some other kind or WTF cover. Not different, but a live copy from music never played live by The Beatles
