    Xenakis in 5.1

This is my "stick out like a sore thumb" post...

I just listened to the Xenakis piece "La Legende d'Eer" (Mode, DVD video 96/24 bit Hi-def) cranked on my 5.1 system (wife at work...phew) and here are my fragmented disjointed thoughts:

1-Can this be any more dense? No, it can't

2-This is some supernatural alien shit

3-There are snippits of this 47 minute piece that vaguely reminded me of Larks Tongues in Aspic, percussion wise

4-The layers of metaillic percussion, deep space drone, incessant jibbering of the above mentioned alien shit, full on rage in bedlam left me completely f'ed up, tongue tied and crucified.

5-I physically could not wipe the chesire cat grin off my face during the majority of this thing

6-The 5.1 mix makes little Stevie Wilson look like a pussy (and I love his work!!!!)

7-I'm seriously considering forceably ejecting my wife from the house so I can experience this face melter again along with the companion 5.1 DVD I picked up (Mode, Electronic Music Vol 2 with three more Xenakis pieces on it)

8-One more thing...woe betide any pathetic sole that happend to be walking down my street when this was in full onslaught.

Never heard it in 5.1, but YEAH MAN!

I would also love to hear Kraanerg in 5.1 (if that even exists). Love your descriptions and notes, especially the SW one - ha!

Ligeti would also be another amazing choice for stuff in 5.1.

You should take this post (and your ass) to TalkClassical - its the PE of "classical".

That was one of the most enthusiast descriptions of an experience I have read in a while. ...and I've never even HEARD of Xenakis but from your decription, this sounds like it would be up my alley.

    Cheers !!

Kraanerg is availble in 5.1 but apparently based on the amazon reviews...buy it for the sound and not the visuals which I would do anyway. Although, it just so happens that the visuals for La Legende d'Eer are wonderful...one long 47 minute still photo montage of the installation that was built for this piece in Paris. It's very dramatic!!

Here is the link for Kraanerg:

    http://www.amazon.com/Xenakis-Kraane...nakis+kraanerg

    I'm picking it up definitely

The ONLY reason I would ever even think about investing in a 5.1 system would be to listen to Xenakis on it, fuck Dark Side Of The Moon.

I need to get that release, I only have an earlier CD release on a different label, which was apparently taken from a poorer quality tape transfer that was missing a couple minutes of the piece.

    Yeah MAN
    I need this
I always thought 5.1 should be a radical listening experience and who other then Xenakis to deliver !

Indeed, Xenakis is the definition of radical (and challenging).

I think his Kraanerg was the first CD I ever bought, back in the late '80's.

Thanks for the tip. This one seems more active than some others I've seen (and it has the PE format)

Hey, that's an OK site. Thanks for mentioning it. Maybe I'll lurk there for a while, though it is a bit meat & potatoes.

I have the Kraanerg DVD, but still no 5.1 system. Gotta get up to speed on this. I did attend a Xenakis performance (Terretektorh) with the audience "inside" the orchestra though (also Boulez's Rituel).
Obvious candidates for further 5.1 treatment : Ives ! Varèse ! The rite of spring ! Stockhausen (Gruppen, Carré) !

    PS : Won't happen.

Just ordered this one from Amazon based on your write-up. Should be excellent listening!

I have a few Morton Subotnick 5.1 DVDs that are pretty excellent as well.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

    You will not be sorry!

Which Morton Subotnick...a friend STRONGLY recommended the Volume 2 Electronic Works on Mode with "Sidewinder" and "Until Spring".

I actually have both Volume 1 and 2 Electronic Works:

    http://www.amazon.com/Subotnick-Vol-...ectronic+works
    http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Wor...ectronic+works

(I know these are the CDs...couldn't find the DVD for Vol 1 on Amazon with a quickie search)

I think they are both lovely, and well worth hearing in surround. Just for personal reasons, I'd love to hear Silver Apples in surround at some point.

Actually, I picked this up back in the old days of Tower Records, and it is quite cool as well, for folks who dig experimental music in 5.1:

    http://www.amazon.com/Immersion-DVD-...uline+oliveros

Includes Oliveros, Merzbow, and a slew of others. Probably of interest to the other "sickies" in this thread ;-)

Three composers whose works are perfect for 5.1 DVD...Henry Brant, Maryanne Amacher and Joseph Hammer.

    One day.. perhaps.

If there was ever an album worth to be mixed in 5.1 its first 2 Urban Sax albums since moving sound is the initial concept of Urban Sax music

I'd probably go for some Tod Dockstader in surround as well.
