Sorry to hear that. I only just got my first Joe Sample CD a week or so ago. An enjoyable album called Carmel. Rest in peace, Joe.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973
Yikes, very sorry to hear this. I've been playing a lot of Crusaders lately, and I picked up a couple of Joe's solo albums I'd only had on LP. His stuff is very well recorded, and I have been enjoying challenging my stereo with it.
A very talented composer and fabulous keyboardist. RIP sweet Joe.
That's a bummer. He was a great player and writer. Another one bites the dust...
A soulful player. Some hip stuff on the Pacific Jazz Crusaders' LPs, uh-huh.
RIP....
Hell, they ain't even old-timey ! - Homer Stokes
Fantastic studio musician. He really knew how to jam.
one of my favorite Ambrosia tunes and piano solos..

The life I love, the dream I weave."

Sad to hear this. My dad was a fan of his and the Crusaders. RIP.
Chile Con Soul-Jazz Crusaders(1965) is just about my fave Latin jazz record.I'll spin this tonight.

Ambrosia's Joe Puerta on the passing of Joe Sample - A short story on hearing of the death of the great Joe Sample.
"We had asked Joe to come and play on the tune Apothecary (a very jazzy number) from the Life Beyond LA album. He came and did a session laid down some very nice piano and a really cool solo. After a few days, he called us back and said he couldn't get the tune out of his head and he felt he could do better, you don't have to pay me I just want to do a better job. What could we say, he came back and did the amazing solo that you hear on the recording, living up to his word he didn't accept a dime. A true gentleman and musical giant was lost to the world."
I only have The Crusaders' Healing the Wounds, which I bought to hear Steve Lukather do "'Cause We've Ended as Lovers," but I always liked Joe Sample's work on it. I always had the impression that it probably wasn't the best representation of his playing - it's kinda smooth-jazzy. I'll have to check out some of the vids here and other stuff he's done.
R.I.P.
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
His was one of the sweetest touches on the keys...i love his work. I've been playing Spellbound a lot lately. Had or still have, somewhere, a lot of crusaders on tape. All because i loved his touch, his sound, his phrasing.
Such a delight to listen to. Very sad indeed, but thanks for the memories.
bon Voyage.
I'm only really familiar with his two iconic keyboard parts on the Aja album by Steely Dan:
The clavinet hook to Black Cow
and the electric piano twinkles on the title track.
Like listening to his other works that people are linking to here though.
Love the Crusaders, and saw Joe live at a free Madison music event a few years ago. He stuck around to talk & sign cds until no one was left. That impressed the hell out of me.
RIP to yet another jazz great.
