Thread: RIP John Gustafson

Remembering the man through his music:

Allow me to add a thumbs-up to his work with Roxy Music. He played on most of their classic 70s LPs, though I think he only toured with them once.

Was Gustafson in the touring lineup? Checking my papers, I saw Gillan on 22 June 1976, bottom of the bill with Elvin Bishop the middle act and Nazareth the headliner. At the time I hated that Deep Purple was splitting all over the place.

    R.I.P. John Gustafson.

Yes pretty sure he was there along with Ray Fenwick , Mark Nauseff , and either Mike Moran or Colin Towns on keyboards . I recall seeing Ray Fenwick live many many years later on with Steve Howe's Remedy

According to Pete Frame's Family Trees :

    - JG joined the Roxy road band for the first time in April 1975 after John Wetton suddenly quit to join Uriah Heep. Had previously played on "Stranded", "Country Life" and "Siren" as session man. Before him Roxy had used John Porter (Jan-Feb 1973), Sal Maida (Feb 1973-July 1974) and of course Wetton (from Sept 1974).

    - The Ian Gillan Band first hit the road in April 1976 with a 13-date French tour, after which Mickey Lee Soule was replaced by Colin Towns. First toured the UK in April 1977. Rest of line-up (Fenwick, Nauseef, and Gustafson) correct.

Very sad news... for the more adventurous listeners here I can strongly recommend checking (buying) the SPHINCTER ENSEMBLE record released last year by Esoteric (but recorded 40 years ago): a pair of Shure mics, a cheap Revox recorder and seven incredible musicians improvising together for the first time. The result ? Much more than you would expect... and Gustafson's groovy bass playing is top notch of course.

Sad news, indeed. Loved his work in Quatermass and Hard Stuff for decades. RIP.

Sad. Solid player with a number of fine bands.

Let's not forget his stellar vocal on "Watch out for the Bat" from Roger Glover's Butterfly Ball album!

R.I.P. Johnny. I loved his dark low-mid heavy bass sound. Shawn Phillip's "Furthermore" has some great playing from him and also features Robinson and Paul Buckmaster amongst others. His snarly voice was great too and him and Gillan used to have screaming matches during the album sessions.

I did a memorial set for him on my show last night. I played Make Up Your Mind, Amazona, Out Of The Blue, Whirlwind and Star Of Sirius.

I totally didn't know that until I rediscovered it a week ago. RIP Simon Zealotes.
