TIN SPIRITS – Scorch CD Album
Featuring Mark Kilminster on lead vocals and bass, ex-XTC member Dave Gregory on guitars plus second lead guitarist and drummer, what they've turned out in that “all important second album” is something that beats the first album into a hollow, and comes out as a mighty work of compositional excellence, 100% performance quality and an all-round gem of an album.
From the opening instrumental through the first song in the form of the flowing “Summer Now”, what you get is the sound of a well and truly laid-back King Crimson (minus the lead peripherals that aren't guitars), to which have been added harmonies on the vocals that are so lush they could turn a desert green. This feel inhabits the album throughout – you know these songs on the '80's Crimso albums where they'd go all sedate and introspective? Well, that's what the sound and feel of this album conjures – the rhythms throughout are solid without being overly complex while the bass throbs easily down below, as the guitars twang, chime, riff, soar and stretch, but rarely going nuclear, exactly as the pace and mood of the pieces demand. Yet, that's not to say it's not got power – more guts, I guess, but there's an edge and bite in there from start to finish. But what really outs the icing on the cake, are the vocals – Kilminster reveals himself to be a singer “par excellence” with one of those vocals that sums up everything that makes a prog-rock singer so excellent without being in any way prog-rock cliché. The feel is soft and effortless, while the harmonies are exquisite, the choruses climb mountains and the songs themselves flow like mighty rivers through musical continents that are positively breathtaking. The combination of all these textures, flavours and moods, in tracks that are bursting with feeling and emotion, on an album where the guitars rule without once being the “sort of thing you've heard a million times before”, makes this album truly, not only something that defies category other than “remarkable”, but is the sort of album you can play and play and play without ever tiring of hearing one single moment from start to finish. It ain't genius – but it's pretty darned close – with more power, the next one could be a killer – meanwhile this is timeless stuff that you simply have to own.
