    Doctor Who #12 (spoiler alert)

So what do we think of the new Doctor?! I thought the first episode was pretty good, I like the sort of discombobulated personality (so far). I loved the line about the long scarf, and all the allusions to The Girl In The Fireplace (and the fact that he knew "this sounds familiar", but couldn't place it). And it's always nice to see Madame Vastra, Jenny and especially Strax. I love Strax!

I liked it...but I had a bellyfull of wine, and had just finished dinner when I sat down to watch it, and....dear me, I nodded off a bit....need to watch the whole thing again.

Maybe some of the old shows. I find the special effects are no substitute for good writing. I fell off the bandwagon 20 years ago. Gimmie some Daleks !!

I'm watching. I'll say that I WANT to like Capaldi, and I think he'll be great. I am nervous about the writing. Until the last few episodes of last series, I thought the writing had reached new lows. I'm one of the fans that liked Matt Smith, and he was the only thing (well, that and a boatload of good faith) keeping me watching. The premiere episode of Capaldi's run hints at some intriguing concepts to be explored (the meaning behind The Doctor's "faces," a more "Alien" version of The Doctor than we've had in a while, and an opportunity to shake off the flirty dynamic that was becoming the norm for Doctor/Companion relationships). I hope they take full advantage of the story potential these concepts create, instead of just abandoning them for more of the same old storytelling. There were some great exchanges between Madame Vastra and Clara about their understanding of The Doctor in this episode.

I was VERY glad the dinosaur turned out to be a minor element of the plot. Seeing it brought back bad memories of episodes past!

As the best science fiction uses the tenets of the form to explore present-day issues, it would be nice if they treat this regeneration (and the issues it raises for Clara) as a proxy for dementia / aging / Alzheimers. I'm not saying that I want The Doctor to be dotty; rather, that Clara could be struggling to find the familiar in Capaldi's Doctor the way a child tries to cling to a parent when they suddenly become a new and disconnected shell of their former self. The leap of faith that is required to keep loving this person when everything you recognize as "them" begins to fall away. I hope they keep her around as a companion long enough to delve into this more. My fear is that they will drop her and get a new companion, because she's "Matt Smith's" companion. It's the very fact that she DOESN'T fit for Capaldi that makes me interested in their relationship.

    Just watched it last night.

Pretty good first episode. Seeding the season well with that last scene I suspect. It'll take awhile before I give a full thumbs up to PC (can't judge just after one episode of course) but he seems like a pretty good fit. And I like that he seems fairly different from Tennent and Smith, while still retaining the wackiness of the doctor.

And dear god am I thrilled that we are getting a whole season at once for a change!

Well, I think it's great to have a mature Doctor again; a dangerous Doctor! I loved the previous 2 but when they tried to be dark it just failed. I was getting really worried that Capaldi was just going to be flat unlikeable. It was like, wow, the Doctor is a DICK! But by the end of the episode he seemed to end up where I thought he'd be. I have really liked Clara up until now but this seems like a bad combination to me though. We shall see how that plays out.

Yeah, that bit where he abandoned Clara in the larder, I thought, "Wait a minute...what's this now?!". Hopefully, that's just a regeneration hiccup, and we won't be seeing him doing that regularly.

I loved that part. It was so unexpected!

It wasn't even that so much- we all saw though that It was the really nutso behavior that made him more distant than ever without any relatability at all. I was just hoping he wasn't going to stay that way for half the season, looks like he wont.

I think they have some vintage Dr. Who on Hulu for free. I'll get around to it at some point. Currently I'm watching ..... Space:1999. Not to derail the thread but not sure I want to start a thread on this show. Anyone seen it ever? I have a vague recollection of it in the 70s but I don't remember if I ever saw any episodes back then. I've seen about 4 eps on Hulu (free of course). It's very British and a bit campy. Martin Landau, who I regard as a great actor isn't too good as the lead on this series. His acting is "wooden" and he just doesn't fit in well with a British ensemble. The premise is interesting but the execution is a bit campy. It's very dated. I'm gonna watch the whole series then start on Dr. Who.

I quite liked Into The Dalek from last week.

I suspect I won't like this week's episode as much.

I thought last week was a silly mashup of Fantastic Voyage and a couple other films that seemed obvious at the time but escape me now. This week was quite fun as it turned out. My favorite of the 3 so far.

BTW imo Space: 1999 is just awful on every level. It tried to be cerebral and failed utterly. The writing was worse than what was happening on the animated Star Trek by a mile and those guys weren't even trying. The premise of the show was not even plausible to a 10 year old. Well... maybe a 10 year old. The only cool thing about the show was the design of the Eagles.

Yeah you nailed it. It really is a bad show but I'm kind of enjoying it. I guess I'm having fun with it because it is so bad it's good. And it is so effing 70s with bell bottoms and porn mustaches... Martin Landau and Barbara Bain just seem out of place among all the British accents. I tried to watch Dr. Who many years ago and just found it campy as all hell. The last time I attempted to watch Dr. Who was a few years ago when it was on SyFy. Just couldn't get into it. It seemed like in the few episodes I saw the "Dr." was always screaming about something. Since I had no sense of the history/legacy of the show I just couldn't follow it.

^ Capaldi does far less screaming. Try watching the last few episodes.

If it's still on SyFy I'm out of luck because I don't have SyFy. I plan on watching the original show (or whatever they have) on Hulu at some point.

I remember seeing it first time around (75/76?) and some of the episodes were downright scary - I recently watched the ep 'Dragon's Domain' again and it still gives the shivers. Modelwork was always good, as was the music. Acting was fine for the time - good actors saddled with poorly written parts.

First season is the better of the two - avoid the second season, as it goes downhill rapidly in all depts. (It was produced by the same guy who vandalised Star Trek TOS in its third season.)

As for the Doctor, I'm really enjoying his new grumpy persona. The pacing seems easier to follow, and the Dalek episode is up there as one of the best ever imho. This weekend's Robin Hood episode is a good laugh, even at the expense of us Scots (Lol, the new Doctor's put-downs would serve him well if he was voting 'Yes' next week and debating against the No campaign....)

I just finished watching an episode where they meet these humans who are thousands of years old and can't die ever. The only redeeming bit of this episode was looking at some of the hot, British babes. And then at the end of episode the Alphans are saying goodbye to these humans they met and you see the moon going away. So they're now controlling the moon like a spaceship. What a bad show. Just awfull. But what the hell, I'm gonna keep watching. It's like a bad train wreck that I just have to watch....

Nah I'm done with Space:1999. I can't keep watching it. God it is just awful, and a chore to sit through. Looks like I won't be able to watch Dr.Who either. That would require a paid subscription. No.
