I looked through her list of movies and I think the only ones I've seen are The Shootist and Misery.

If you want to see Bacall at her best, the movie "To Have & Have Not", with her yet to be husband Bogart is the one imo.

One of the classic lines in movie history comes from Bacall when she says to Bogart's character, "You know how to whistle, don't ya Steve? You just put your lips together and blow"

RIP to a classy lady to the end. My mother once struck up a conversation with her at Bloomingdale's, where they were both shopping, and told the 10 year old me that she was delightful and down to earth.

    Absolutely.

I'd add 'Key Largo' and 'The Gig Sleep' to the list of her must-watch movies. Both classics.

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

She was one of the most attractive stars of that era, IMO.

Totally agree! If she looked like that today, the phrase SMOKIN' HOT would apply instead of hubba hubba.

The last vestages of Hollywood's Golden Age vanish by attrition. Bacall was royalty.

And, at a STUNNING 19 years old! Bogey was 25 years her senior.

    Man was she smokin'!

RIP to a class act who made her voice heard during those dark days of black-listing.

David Niven's memoir of his days in Hollywood,"Bring On The Empty Horses" has many passages recalling Niven's long standing friendship with Bogart and Bacall.

Bogie was no walk in the park to live with, according to Niven, and Bacall was one tough cookie, well able/willing to do battle with Bogie and to let his foibles and vices go by the wayside, when she thought that a battle wasn't winnable.

A good read, as is Niven's first memoir,The Moons A Balloon.I enjoyed them both.

I see what you did there. In all seriousness, I think she just had a natural husky voice. She was only in her teens when she did "To Have And Have Not", so unless she'd been smoking since birth I don't think it would have affected the way she sounds.

I read in one of the obits that she did voice exercises in the beginning to lower her voice. She probably started fairly low anyway. They were serious smokers back then. Killed Bogart in his 50s.

    RIP Slim.
The older I get, the better I was.

Bacall was a diminutive woman who projected an aura of steel. She was one-of-a-kind.

I saw her on the set of a film called "Mr. North" when I lived in Rhode Island. I pointed her out to an old man who looked at her and said "She hasn't aged well". He hadn't either. She was one of those few stars who didn't go for the "nip and tuck". I saw Robert Mitchum driving a Model A Ford that day as well. I never have had a chance to see the movie.
