    Who is Ireland's greatest songwriter?

    It's official, Phil Lynott.
    http://www.todayfm.com/mobile/index.php?id=9175

And although he came No. 6, this for me is the best Irish song ever written:

And this is also top class:

    My top list is:

    1. Phil Lynott
    2. Christy Moore
    3. Damien Dempsey
    4. Sinead O'Connor
    5. Shane McGowan
    6. Máire Brennan
    7. Jimmy McCarthy
    8. Mary Coughlan

Phil Lynott for me,as songwriter and performer.

Great song, shame it was such a touristy video though. Most of the best pubs are on the North Side in the markets area not in Temple Bar, which has been a huge tourist trap for decades.
My favourite song is Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)

What? No love for Van Morrison?

    I love Phil/Thin Lizzy.

For me it's Shane McGowan. At least, when he is not too stoned or drunk to stop his brains from working.

I probably can't come up with more than 5 people and Luka Bloom (Christy Moore's brother Barry) would definitely be on that list.

I was expecting this thread to be a landslide win for Van (though I only like his first three album)

I'll name Rory Gallagher (around his Irish Tour film, he'd had a few excellent songs)

Not a Thin Lizzy fan, though.

Not really, not in Ireland that much. Besides, he's from Northern Ireland not Ireland

What don't you understand? The poll was taken from listeners to a radio station in Ireland asking for best songwriter from Ireland. Van Morrison is not from Ireland he is from from Northern Ireland which is part of the UK.

Yea, Luka would definitely be in my top 20. I've seen Christy live but never Luka.

To us over here on the opposite side of the pond, Ireland is Ireland. I know that part of Ireland is the UK and all that but it's still Ireland, no? By all means Peter, I don't mind a history lesson.

That's what I'm thinking. Except, I don't want the history lesson.

It's not what the Irish would say...

Indeed, there is only one Ireland and it's a republic... of course, its Northen province is occupied by unfriendly forces

Nope, no history lesson,please.... especially from a UK monarchist subject, who's going to get it all wrong...

I think Van was not included because he is from Belfast (i.e. Northern Ireland, part of the UK), not Eire / Teh Replublic of Ireland.

It is exactly what the Irish say, I'm Irish and I live in Ireland.
The ENGLISH often call Ireland (the Republic) Southern Ireland, which is incorrect.
The state's full name is the Republic of Ireland, but called Ireland by almost everyone. That the island also has the same name I know is confusing for outsiders, but there you have it.
There is a very common comparison i.e. the amount of people who call the USA simply America, but I don't know of anyone who calls the USA, the Republic

Incorrect, only 6 counties of Ulster are occupied by the British, the other 3 belong to Ireland.
And I'm curious who is the UK monarchist subject you are talking about?

While I think that is partly true i.e. the radio listeners like most Irish people, myself included, think of Ireland the country when the name Ireland is mentioned, they & I rarely think of the whole island.
However, I KNOW it has just as much to do with the fact that Van's 60s-70s bluesy, soulful, pop was never big in Ireland, it was always much bigger in the UK and the US. The biggest import to Ireland from the USA was always country music and folk music.
