Yes, he was a very nice guy. A shame that so many of the 'good ones' have been passing away lately. RIP Tony.
Tony Hooper's death was reported today on Rick Wakeman's twitter account. Tony was co founding member of the Strawbs with Dave Cousins and Ron Chesterman and was featured on following albums:...
I appreciate your defense of our old friend, and I know about his bad experiences with Einthoven, but the music media do not control tastes as much as manipulating what gets played and how much....
Pardon my late response, but Gordon's death really knocked me for a loop as it was unexpected and I thought the man was somewhat bullet proof. Silly on my part, I'm sure, but we tend to view...
Thanks for this post Phil. Esoteric have done yeoman duty with their many "Deluxe" edition CD releases with the Pocol Harum, Strawbs and Renaissance reissues being especially satisfying, especially...
That's absolutely a good point that I often overlook. ATTWT is definitely not on par with classic albums like SEBTP, The lamb, Trick of the Tail or even Duke that followed it. But I still love it.
I'm not interested in trying to recall the first album I ever purchased, or attracted me to prog, as it's too hard to recall at 69 years old.
I'm just surprised to still see that ATTWT is still...
Now that the initial shock has worn off, deep feelings of loss and mourning set it. I'm sure that all prog fans will remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard of Neils'...
Barre with Ian :up Barre without Ian :up Ian without Barre: Meh.
And their unshaved nether regions.
As about time that someone posted some love for this album, it's a prog essential in my book and it's terribly overlooked.
Just remember that Hahken is pronounced like bahken, as in bahken & eggs.
Be there or hand in your prog credentials forever.

This may have been popular but it's still good psych.

Yes, it's hard to imagine the impact the 13th Floor Elevators would have had if their album "Easter Everywhere" had been issued by one of the major record labels at the time, who were desperately...

obinTo conclude my thoughts on Martin Barre in this tread, that went haywire at times, my gripe was solely centered on the loyalty, or Anderson's lack there of, in his treatment of Barre. Nothing...
That only applies when a statement is not a fact. :p
Barre may have considered himself a neophyte but he knew who he was up against: Balckmore, Iommi, Page et al. He had the mojo he needed. Aqualung would not have been the same without him.
I've seen Barre three times solo and he just gets better! I doubt he makes the same money playing solo as he did supporting Anderson. But is he happier is the important question.
My regard for Barre's playing should really speak for itself. I agree that he had unique contributions that really rose to the surface when the music became extreme. When Ian lost his voice, Tull's...
Yeah man! Black/Jethro/Roxy/UK/Tull/Sabbath! :D
See my above response to chalkpie.
This is such a well written and informative disagreement, that I actually read it three times, so well done old chap! :up
But I feel that you misunderstood my point. I said that Barre was the most...
Not often, but Barre composed and arranged an incidental piece of fluff which became the killer instrumental opening section to the song Minstrel In the Gallery. If your friend has any more inane...
Tell your friend that Barre played on 20 straight Tull studio albums where as the other never played on more than 5, and that Anderson thought Barre so indispensable that he dragged him along on his...
What's the mystery? Anderson dissolved Tull to persue a solo agenda and now plays Tull music with a surrogate band. Sounds like a plot for a Floyd concept album. Hey..what a minute...!
He got pushed. (From the top of a building.)
Nothing was specifically mentioned on Barre's FP page and the Barre Band Website, except that Barre and Doane Perry are still pissed for not being asked to join Ian's TAAB/TAAB2 tour.
And that makes Barre asked to perform as a special guest (the special guest) out of the question?
Barre would never make the same $ playing without Anderson/Tull. Injustice part 2.
Yes, we're still talking about this because a reformed Tull minus Barre has much more impact that Anderson touring solo without him. If Barre was not deeply hurt by being thrown out of Anderson's...
Sean, if the unassuming Mr. Barre was not one of the nicest people to ever to strap on a guitar and play in a British rock band, I would agree with you. Anyone who's ever met and conversed with...
All day long I've heard plugs for JT playing at the Beacon Theater in NY., without the magnificent Martin Barre. The man who most wants to play Tull's music after Ian Anderson. Probably more than...
This is a great f**king post! :up
Same here. But I'm 68 and I'm starting to skip songs that are just passable as well as the clunkers! LOL
Yeah, I can't do this with a straight face. Just Love is terrible. And it's Lambert's only song on the album! :lol
Wha...even on Hero and Heroine? :huh
You are 100% right and that's why Dragonfly sounds better than the Strawbs' debut.
BatS is a great album too, but I think that the first side is bit weak. However, The River/Down By the Sea is one of my all time favorite prog songs and is as good as the multi suite Autumn and...
TBHB is very solid too. Strangely, it's no longer listed for sale on the Strawbs' website. A very mysterious band the Strawbs are.
Essential: Sandy and the Strawbs, Dragonfly, Witchwood, Grave New World, Hero and Heroine, and Ghosts. All are so ridiculously good that I hardly listen the newer stuff, but Dancing To The Devils'...
It was always KC's ability to produce sincerely moving ballads, in addition to their many progressive works, that has kept me in awe of Mr. Fripp and co. for nearly 50 years. Early standards like C...
An exceptional pianist, Rave fills some big shoes very well and is as technically proficient as the late John Tout. I believe he is the band's musical director since Michael Dunford passed on, and...
Oh, this blows. Only Little Richard remains from my heroes. RIP Fats.
As I recall from an interview, the lyrics are about an A&R creep that the band knew but did not directly interact with Genesis. But they felt that type of pressure indirectly.
Tell us what you really think without sugar coating it. Just kidding. An honest opinion backed up some rational reasoning is always appreciated. At least by me. :)
I don't see why they shouldn't. It's another opportunity for Ian to make some more coin.
I would consider something like the Autumn suite or the song Ghosts by Strawbs to be mature songwriting. It need not be a Cousin's song suite but something fleshed out both musically and lyrically.
Another strong agreement. Jobson and the late Craney were indeed stellar and A still remaining a "Tull sounding" album is a major selling point for me.
Agree 100% on all counts. "The Pine Martins Jig", aside from being a great instrumental, is the type of folky offering that ties into the previous SFtW and Heavy Horses. And referring to Tull fans as...
Jethro Tull's album "A", to me, has always been treated like some bastard stepchild. I understand that it might have been an excuse for Anderson to breakup the former lineup, and that Eddie Jobson...
No, that was KnWA. (Knaves With Attitude.)
I agree, but it's not mentioned much these days.
Opps, a Freudian slip as I was just discussing Harper's influence on Anderson's acoustic guitar playing just last night. Particularly in chord voicing.
So, just strike out Stormcrotch and insert...
There's not much I disagree with here regarding Stormcock, but I'm often surprised that few people mention that Stormcock was recorded in a bleak time in the Tull history. Glascock was mortally ill...
Does that mean you like them :horns, or just found other things to be critical of? :p
