Oh No He DIDN'T!

Seen he's been reviewing some prog here and there. Anyone have an opinion about his level of expertise on such matters?
Feeling the love for sure....
It was just a matter of time, right?
When the needle hits the groove....
Hackett should just join The Musical Box.
The thing about "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" that so few here seem to understand is that it is a "Rock Opera" and it is meant to be seen just as much as heard. When you see it, you realize that...
The state of music these days is vividly on display right here on this thread. The problem is with the fans more than anything. In more technical terms the problem is on the demand side, not so...
When was the last time a progressive instrumental music album was on any kind of music charts?
I remember "Blow by Blow" being a huge selling album. Gabriel's "Passion" comes to mind as well.
Sklar makes a lot of fine points about bass playing.... and the devolution of the music business. If anyone knows, it would be Sklar.
I thank him for taking the time to do the interview.

The wisdom of a man is still the length of his beard.
He basically says "I won't bring it up, but if the younger people bring it up.... I'll give em an earful"
Always the definitive versions for me. Never liked the speeded up chipmunk vocals on the album. Led Zeppelin was a LIVE band. So visceral and powerful, yet could be just as sensitive and nuanced...

To me, she is trying to sound way too much like Chris Cornell on "Euphoria Morning". It's the off kilter grungy vocal style with a bit more complexity in the music. I suppose because she's not a...
Unfortunately Thijs Van Leer is spot on.
I'd be interested to read the rest of the article. I don't buy music mags because music is something I prefer to listen to or interactively discuss with the...

Daryl is a fine player and a very nice man. However, it's really a bit insulting they didn't bring him in as a full time member, writer etc.
Certainly competent and capable.
As if they were not...
I was hoping she would do something much better. She's a bassist with good backing vocal qualities. She can stake a claim as a lead singer, but she's not a proper lead singer by any means. It...
I just went out and supported a Canterbury band a few nights ago called "Soft Machine". It was an amazing show and left me wondering
why young musicians don't embrace such creative, expressive and...
Not sure if you're just being sarcastic or rather completely missed my point.
Steve,
I genuinely appreciate your thoughtful reply.
There is so much negativity and sarcasm on internet forums in the broader sense...generally speaking... it's tiring.
I think this is or...
Steve,
There was a great classic intellectual book written (coincidentally?) during the golden age of prog called "Zen and the Art or Motorcycle Maintenance"
I can't assume you have read this, or...
I will say this... I just want the music to be as good or better. That starts from the drums up. Sure there are drummers and guitarists who can "shred". But music is more than that, correct? Prog...
As soon as he went "Drum Machine" it was game over.
It sounds like a poor quality bootleg at best... you can't fix what is originally going to tape. Just bad sound engineering. It is what it is.
I think Soft Machine 7 is the best overall sounding...

It was an awe inspiring show. I didn't even know the Levin brothers were opening, and would have been happy to leave after seeing that set.... they were fantastic as well.

Thanks Steve,
Some good advice. I'll keep looking for new, fresh, original and inspiring bands of today's youth culture.
It was a great show.. best I have seen in a long time and just confirmed to me that there is a real problem going on in this culture. I did not see one person under age 50 there. I mean literally...
She is no better than Phil Chen. I don't think she is nearly as good. For those who don't know of Chen, a Jamacian bassist that played on Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow". So Tal has copied his style a...
And this should be happening today in music. There is no reason for it not too, only ignorance and closed minded thinking.
Everything you described is exactly the problem with today's music. A complete lack of originality. Copy cat this, copy cat that. Certainly Tal has the chops to do something original, both as a...
I had a friend who was a couple years older than me when I was about 14 who was also a drummer. He was obsessed with Phil Collins and pointed out to me how Phil could do these syncopated off beat...

Nice to see Alan back on a classic Ludwig kit. Those kits sound great for just about any genre of music.
Thanks for the thoughtful and articulate reply!
No, just not a good album after Songs from the Wood. "A" stood for AWFUL.
The 80's was not a good decade for prog rock in general.

So you had a taste of it..
Do you think the music scene is better now? Yes or No? (different is not an answer)
Paul McCartney, the greatest all around musician/ songwriter who ever got anywhere near "rock" recently admitted to his embarrassment of not being able to read a note of music.
"I don't see music...
"Songs from the Wood" was the peak on all levels, creatively, musicianship, songwriting, production... just an astonishing record.
The bus slowed after that, parked and with "A" the bus was...

She is an excellent bassist. Not one of the greats, but excellent as a solid pro player for live or studio work.
What is (was) unique about her is that a few years ago...
Why was it better?
1. You could go see Led Zeppelin for $10
2. Music was released on Vinyl Records with the album, artwork etc... a better presentation of the artist.
3. You had professionals...
If a band put out a live album similar to "Playing the Fool" it would just be a yawn today. No one would be that impressed with how great they were live, because the authenticity would always be in...
What you are either forgetting or don't know is that in an analog recording session, you still have to perform it correctly. You can't fix out of time drumming or bad notes. You can't fix vocals...
I accept your opinion, but the proof is the reality that the analog era produced the best music. Take a poll in any genre and nearly all the top 5 or 10 will all be from the 60's or 70's (outside of...
I agree with what you are saying. I recently saw one of the last interviews with Greg Lake and he mentioned that in the 70's originality was THE CURRENCY of the time... and that now that currency no...
If we take a poll, even on this site of the top five greatest progressive rock groups of all time, all five of them will be from the 1970's. Why? because they actually were the best top five bands. ...
I was better when music was authentic. I don't see the future of creative authentic music having a bright future anytime soon.

That's how you do it. Note to musicians, use real instruments and keep it real. Stop pretending....
If you are still listening to their music, they are as alive as they ever were. It's only when you stop listening to them that they die.
