I managed to replay entire "Counterpoints " and came to the conclusion that there is only 1 skipable track on it: "Rock 'n' Roll Show". The final 10 min are indeed excellent.
About "Pure Love" - I...
Yesstiles - great post! My personal, very subjective summary of Argent's discography would be:
- debut, "In Deep" and "Ring of Hands": 2 or 3 good tracks, the rest is forgettable
- "All Together...
Hugues - AFAIK no studio version of The Fakir. I've never heard 95 release by Wingsong. On my "to get" list.
I meant to write "half of century", not decade. I was under heavy influence of Sangria when I wrote that. I am currently in Seville Spain.
^ Two great albums, I favor Tonton Macoute slighly higher than Indian Summer and spin it more often too. Both from 1971, what a great year in music that was. Tonton Macoute would probably make my Top...
I found it on YT and gave it a try. To be honest, after hearing it for the first time I wasn't too impressed, but I usually don't give up very easily on those hyper-obscurities. The music is not...
Parameter's Galactic Ramble? Neh, not on the same level with the bands mentioned by Scrotum Scissor. At least IMO. Agreed, Ithaca seriously underrated and one of my all -time favorites from...
I agree with you Spyros, they are scrapping off the bottom of the barrel but...still better that than nothing. I really enjoyed listening to all the CDs I purchased from Seelie Court catalog. It felt...
I can't believe it, not even one post in over 3 years.
@nosebone - where are you?
All proto-prog fans are gone from PE?
There is a new British label releasing archival material from 70s called...
I still have the CD reissues of Gravy Train first two albums. Definitely not one of my favorite bands, but I spin the debut a lot. Overall more of a bluesy hard rock band than progressive rock....
Most memorable concert I've been to: the Residents, 1990 "CUBE-E" tour, Florence Gould Hall NYC. Avant-rock rules!
Well, I can volunteer too, with my informatic skills. I got my Master's in Computer Science the same time Gnosis2000 was developed. It should be enough, I hope.
Yes.
Yep, pretty much this is the quickest way to get in touch with Dirk. It worked for me couple last times I had an issue.
Sorry, I never understood the hype about this album and Spirit in general. There are 2-3 good songs on it. :oops
But...I'm glad I peeked back in here and saw Scrotum Scissor's post about Seatrain's...
I am a total sucker for this type of music (Spring, Gnidrolog, Marsupilami, Gracious, Samurai, Web, Fantasy, Aardvark etc), so my opinion may not be objective. I love both albums of Spring. Second...
I see, you're a huge fan of RIO / avant-rock. Nice, high rates for Henry Cow, Thinking Plague, 5uu's, Cheer-Accident etc. "Fear Draws Misfortune" is one of my favorite albums from new millenium,...
Well, it seems that Dirk has my emails on auto-delete.
BTW, I am KOZ.
Can anyone send me the link to rebuild/update a profile page?
I listed few new titles on ebay today. The auctions end in 5 days.
There is even 1 Proto-prog album, so popular on PE.
The album was 14 on PE Top 100 Proto-prog albums poll!
Born in 1961 in Warsaw, Poland. My older brother got me into progressive rock. Lucky guy had a friend in High School whose father was a diplomat travelling frequently to London. Brought many LPs with...
Most exotic place that I've been to, but I wouldn't probably go back there - Pakistan, but I only visited Karachi.
Most exotic and fascinating place I've visited and I would go back even today if I...
I guess it depends what you like. In my personal opinion Storks fly high. I would put s/t album in my Top 5 progressive rock albums from Finland, together with:
Wigwam - "Fairyport"
Tasavallan...

Indeed. Maybe not weird (I don't listen to weird music ;-)) but your site Tom, helped me find many obscure titles. And thank you for accepting me as a reviewer. If I remember correctly I had to wait...

Thanks for looking,
Just curious if anyone from PE proto-prog fans bought Indian Summer's new LP or Belle Antique CD edition. I heard couple clips on YouTube and I wasn't impressed with audio quality. I don't collect...
CD Japan is just a retail CD shop. The CD was released by Japanese record label Belle Antique.
New album in its entirety includes the unheard demos and live gig from 1970 and 1971.
The album was...
1. Caravan (2002)
2. Camel (2003)
3. Steve Hacket (2002)
4. Anglagard (2003)
5. PFM (2005) and Magma (2003) ;)
Great album, great recommendation Chris. :up
Wow, awesome post. Thank you so such. This is exactly what we are trying to accomplish.
The problem is that the perfect list of Top 100 essential proto-prog albums cannot be compiled.
Why? Our...
Chris, just so we are on the same page - not all of them are essential to me personally. I wouldn't include some of the above titles in my Top 100, but they were recommended by others. I wanted to be...
I completed my research, went over all submitted recommendations. I picked 20+ titles, shared the list with couple other PE members to get second opinion. I tried to be objective, I only included 1...
Unfortunately I lost the full spreadsheet with all individuals votes (hard drive crash). :-(
I only have the final list with the statistics (# of voters / average rating per album).
Big Sleep -Bluebell Wood
Ancient Grease's Women and Children First
The Dog That Bit People
AFAIR, we considered these 3 albums to the list in 2004. They were rejected.
There is a reason why...
Mogrooves, I sent you IM. Can you please respond to it?
Yep, I think that was in 2004.
Actually I am working with Chris (nosebone), using IMs to avoid any type of disputes.
Do you remember how it was 12-13 years ago? Mad war.
Obviously before we add anything to the list we will ask...
I can hear Mo saying... define obscure.
I assume my working title "Vintage Prog" is no-go?
Okay... how about "Late 60s / Early 70s Minor League Prog Rock"
You know... minor chords... minor...
I agree with you that these albums should be removed from the list. We shouldn't have any folk, folk related albums on the list.
I will explain why below. I just don't understand why few pages later...
That's right. That's why we decided to split the timeline to avoid the confusion:
1. 66-69 (proto-Prog: very influential, successful, well known bands/artists: the Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, Moody...
Egg will be removed from the list, together with Traffic, Procol Harum, Family, Greenslade and Colosseum. They don't fit the general scope of list: lesser known/2nd tier late 60s, early 70s...
I don't think so Jim. I've never heard about England being linked with prototypical bands from early 70s.
First Aid is full of synths, not vintage organ sound.
I will work on the updates to the...
I agree the time frame is just a guideline but we are after the sound. Good example is Kestrel, album released in 1975, but perfectly fits what we are looking for. The album sounds like something...
To be honest with you I don't even know [i]Mercator Projected[/] month of the release. I wrote October as an approximate marker. The sound is more important than the time of the release. Do the music...
We purposely didn't/don't want include ALL prog bands to give more attention to obscure, lesser known bands. Otherwise the final list would be boring and full of usual suspects.
Only people who are...
Mo, Procol Harum' s "Shine on Brightly" was included on the list.
Listen, if you publish something about music and it gets translated to Polish or English let me know. I will definitely buy it. I used to be fluent in Russian language, but that was long long time...
Odin would probably make my Top 100 list if we extend the timeline to 1972, and they were not really from Germany. ;-)
Another overlooked 1970 album, this time from Germany but with English...
Lev - nice post on previous page, well written, you have a skill my friend. I don't agree with you that "proto-prog" is a distinct music style, sorry. Please read the rest of this post for for...
Step 1. Create a "master list".
We almost have it. It would be the full list from page 1 plus some additions, the albums recommended on previous pages that deserve to be included. I was hoping for...
My own, but I didn't really count them (not enough time :-), rough estimates: +/-5.
I personally think we already have enough challenges here.
Don't you think that newer proto prog bands would benefit more to be included on "Essential retro-prog albums" list?
Why can't you suggest...
Well... we can fix it and create revised list of essential PROTO/EARLY Prog albums. I have a plan how to do it without disputes, but I will need the support of at least 15 volunteers / enthusiasts of...
In my case, and I am a real sucker for this type of music:
- 30 albums are essential / borderline classic (12-14 in Gnosis scale)
- 30 excellent (11)
- 30 very good (10)
- 10 albums don't belong...
This is a very accurate categorization.
I am glad to see Aquila and Hannibal in the same category, because not only I wouldn't include Hannibal but got rid of Aquila. Both albums are not essential....
I do agree with you 100% in the regards to the distinction between "early" and "proto". If someone asks me to give him an example of proto-prog, "In Held 'Twas in I" by Procol Harum would be my first...
