My boss gave me a VHS tape of the first few episodes of The Sopranos from HBO when it was brand new and said "You'll love this". And I did, and was a massive fan for life from that moment on. Anyway, I instantly recognized James Gandolfini from another favourite of mine, "True Romance". (as well as many other familiar actors, of course, and I think Edie Falco is absolutely excellent)... I recall a story about his help among other NY-area citizens during the immediate post-9/11 cleanup. Admirable. Loved him in that movie with Robert Redford where he was the warde. Too young to die... what a shame, so young. Great actor, R.I.P.

Wow. What a shock. I've been watching Sopranos reruns 3-4 times a week lately since the last few months too. It wasn't on at 8pm tonight which caused me to log in and see this. :(

I didn't see one single episode of Sopranos while it was still in production. I'm a news junkie, so that's pretty much all I watch on TV outside of sports, but a couple of years ago I saw one episode and I was hooked. The fucking thing was brilliant! I had to see all of it after that.

RIP J.G.

Oh yeah, another Sopranos junkie here.

Life's a bitch & then you die. RIP to a simply superb actor!

Holy shit, that sucks. The Sopranos was indeed one of the greatest shows ever on television, and he was a big part of that. Same age as me too.

Just a tremendous loss. Loved The Sopranos too. Watched it all unfold on HBO from the beginning and just a few months ago, took the entire series out one season at a time from the library to rewatch.

Coincidentally, my girlfirend and I have been watching this series through DVDs we check out of the library. We just started watching season 6. Tony gets shot and goes into a coma where he's in purgatory for a while. Anyway, yesterday we watched the episode where he's released from the hopsital and the final lines he speaks in the episode are about how he almost died and that every day going forward was a gift...

This morning I find out he passed on...

R.I.P. "T".

Very sad news. Gandolfini was a New Jersey guy in real life, not just as Tony Soprano. Saw him at a Rutgers football game a couple years ago with his son, and he was decked out in a team jersey, a real fan. My boss went to college at the same time and knew of him back then.

I may not seem the type -if there is such a thing, but I LOVED the Sopranos, huge fan of the show, and especially of Tony's character. He managed to make that character nearly likeable, until he would do something truely awful. We felt sympathy and contempt for Tony at the same time. Not easy to pull off as an actor.

RIP

Agreed about his character. you rooted for him and despised him in every episode.
